Fix a Dog Allergy

Aside from needing their basic needs fulfilled, dogs may also need help regarding some health problems. Dogs are actually susceptible to medical conditions like allergies which the owner should quickly take note of and have cured to prevent the condition from worsening.

Making Your Dog Itch: Allergy Possibilities

Dog Collars

Allergies cannot be prevented unless the owner is aware of which allergens his dog is allergic to. Here are some helpful tips and hints to fix this problem just in case they come up.

Inhalant Allergy

Most common of these dog allergies is inhalant allergy. The most common symptoms are scratching of the genital areas, abdomen, armpit or face, and prolonged chewing and licking. Upon close inspection, the dog develops a reddish area caused by too much licking.

If you suspect that your dog has this allergy, then you must bring him to your vet. A veterinarian can diagnose this accurately through allergy testing.

Bacteria allergy

Bacteria can be another cause of dog allergy. Bacteria allergy (specifically Staphylococcus allergy) is not a very common condition. Only a few canines react negatively to this bacteria; most other dogs have become accustomed to it.

If your dog is allergic to bacteria, they can easily develop crusts on his skin or even lose some hair on the spot that he normally scratches. You need to bring your dog to a vet before the patches of exposed skin becomes infected.

Flea allergy

Flea, per se, does not cause the dog's allergic reaction but the flea's saliva is the main culprit. A vet or even the owner can easily figure this out.

If you see your dog scratching himself frequently, then you should check his coat thoroughly to see if he has fleas. If you see fleas, that's a pretty good indication that it's causing your dog's discomfort. Since there can be other causes aside from fleas, though, it's better to bring your dog to a vet and have him diagnosed and tested for allergies. If it's flea allergy after all, then you should ask your vet for his recommended flea shampoo and medication.

Food Allergy

Allergy to food is also possible. Manufactured dog foods are a combination of a variety of ingredients, one or a few of which can be causing your dog's allergies. Your dog may have this type of allergy if he keeps on scratching or sneezes a lot, vomits, loses control of his bowels, etc.

Diagnosis of food allergy can be quite difficult. You need to fix a different meal for a certain period of time to see which is causing the allergy. Thus, in one period, you can give your dog chicken meat. Then, on another the diet can be restricted to pork and so on and so forth. Should the dog develop an allergy at anytime a certain ingredient was used, you'll know that it's causing the allergy so you should avoid serving your dog this food again.

Contact allergy

This is an allergy caused by an object that the dog is in constant contact with. It could be his food bowl, his collar, or another thing entirely that's causing the allergy. Since this is the least common, you must rule out all other allergy causes. After that is done, start eliminating the things he is in contact with to isolate the main cause.

Letter to Your Neighbor Regarding Their Barking Dog

Many of us have been faced with the dilemma of a neighbor's barking dog and how we are to get the dog to stop barking. Solutions range from the extreme of calling law enforcement to the more personal conversation with your neighbor. Either way, the thought of having to deal with such an unpleasant situation is enough to make you sick from stress. How do you like that? You get stressed over having to stop your neighbor's dog from barking. Knowing that many people have to deal with this problem, much like I did, I thought it would be helpful if I shared a letter that I wrote to my neighbor. Hopefully you can cut and paste this into a word document and make some minor tweaks that better fit your personality. Here is the letter for your use...

Dear Neighbor,

Dog Collars

As I'm sure you are unaware, your dog has been barking throughout the day while you've been at work. I try to calm him down by talking through the fence to him. Unfortunately, this only seems to aggravate him more. I wish there was something I could do that would get him to stop barking. Since I work odd hours, I'm normally home during the day and need to get rest. I'm not sure if you would consider a bark collar or not but we need to find a solution to the barking.

I've had friends who have called law enforcement on their neighbors before informing them of the barking problem first. I am the type of person that would like to resolve the issue between us before ever having to consider that option.

I think a bark collar or a "Bark Free" Ultrasonic device would be two great solutions. My cousin uses the bark collar on his Labrador and the collar has worked wonderfully. He tells me "Disco", the dog, has been completely trained not to bark throughout the day with his collar on. Of course the bark collar might not be your first solution so I've also included the option of the "Bark Free" device. You simply put batteries in the device and it sends a high pitched sound once a dog starts barking. It will take a few days to train your dog to understand that the ultrasonic sound is being created because of his barking. However, once your dog learns that he is causing this high pitched noise (only a dog can hear), he will be trained to stop barking.

You've been a great neighbor and I'm hopeful that my two solutions to the barking problem will be something that you will embrace. Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you. I look forward to many peaceful day ahead.

Thank you,

Herniated Discs in Dogs and Treatment Options

What a Herniated Disc Is

The disc that sets between the spinal vertebrae ruptures when the dog has a herniated disc. When the disc ruptures the gel-like material on the inside of it seeps out. This material then can become hardened and calcified, which lessens its shock-absorption ability. Pressure can cause this hardened substance to explode or bulge into the spinal canal nearby, where the spinal cord is located. This is the process that is known as herniation. This can result in pain and elevate to feeling loss or paralysis.

Treatment Options for Herniated Discs in Dogs

There is more than one treatment option for the dogs when a herniated disc happens. If the dog is still moving then prednisone can be given to the dog. Treatment with this will lessen the swelling around the spinal cord which is causing the pain and making it unpleasant for the dog to move. This treatment can take the place of surgery sometimes. The dog should not however stay on this treatment too long because steroids like the prednisone can have negative side effects that can cause the dog problems.

The veterinarian could instead recommend limited activity and rest for the dog. This will decrease the amount of stress that dog's back is being put through. Of course this treatment and the prednisone are only for mild cases where the dog can still walk.

In the event your dog cannot walk or other treatments have not worked, the doctor will most likely want to operate. He will order various diagnostic procedures to be preformed first though. This surgery will help take the pressure off the dog's spinal cord which is brought on by the hardened gel and other debris.

A great percentage of the dogs do quite well with the surgery, if the nerve damage is not too severe and it is caught soon enough. Rehabilitation is also part of this treatment. Rehabilitation for dogs could involve exercises and underwater treadmills to improve muscular strength. This could also improve how the dog in functioning neurologically.

The major problem with herniated discs is that they can keep happening. As long as there is a healthy disc left it can become herniated. There are some breeds of dogs that have more of a tendency towards this problem than others. The body weight should be kept down in the dogs that are predisposed to this problem. Any dog is good physical health can recover from this problem better than one in poor physical condition.

Also instead of regular neck collars use the chest harness kind. The neck collars can cause stress on the neck. The dogs also should not have jarring motions happen to the back such as jumping off of the furniture.

When you are suspecting problems contact the veterinarian immediately.

Homemade Dog Doors For Your Pet

Do you have a hyperactive pet dog who loves going in and out your home? It is OK to have kind of pet but sometimes it can be annoying and disturbing for you to open and close the door every time your pet enters and leave the house. It can also distract you especially if you have many things to do. However, because of the dog doors that are very common nowadays, you do not have to limit the freedom of your pet anymore. You can already let them enters and leave the house anytime without interfering with your activities.

Dog doors vary depending on its type and style. There are a lot of choices which you can choose from. But if you have limited budget, you can also try to make personalized one. Aside from saving your money, you can create a more customized one using the design that you may prefer. First thing that you have to do is to measure the height, width and length of your pet to determine the right size of the door you are going to make. Purchase a dog door kit and trace out an outline on the door using a pencil 3 to 4 inches from its base on the dimension you have just gathered. You can then cut through your door on both of its sides around the outline you just made using a saber saw. Make sure you have selected the right blades of the saw to avoid ripping your wood door. After that, just pop out that piece of door and you are now ready to install the frame. You can screw the frame for the inside of the dog door into its place, and just do the same procedure with the frame for the outside part of the door. Just make sure that you must attach the flap outside door frame. Most of the time, it is usually made of plastic or just a piece of metal.

If you want to add more safety to your house, consider creating doors with security panel and a magnetic catch so the door flaps would not just blow open. Electric dog door would be a better choice compare to the usual manual dog doors in order for you to restrict other animals from entering inside your home. It may take a long time for your dog to learn how to use the door so be patient with them.
