How to walk your dog on a loose lead. Getting started.

How to walk your dog on a loose lead. Getting started. Video Clips. Duration : 6.65 Mins.

This is the technique I use for teaching an owner whose dog pulls and associates forward progress with tight lead. We want him to walk by you like there is no lead at all because he wants to and not because he is forced to through correction, lead jerking, head collars, choke chains, commands, finger jabbing, foot nudging and so on. Walking near you should be a joy for your dog, not a stressful and painful experience he wants to escape from.

Treadmill Training - Training Your Dog on the Treadmill

Ever since Cesar Millan mentioned a dog on a treadmill, owners across the country have tried their hand at treadmill training. Some owners have succeeded while others have failed. Like any type of training, treadmill training takes time and patience. It is highly unlikely that your pooch will be a natural, but he can be taught how to use the equipment. A treadmill should not replace a daily exercise routine; though, sometimes, it is a necessary addition.

Before you toss your pooch on the treadmill, there are safety precautions you should take. Realize that your dog may be frightened by the machine and try to find his way off of it. For this reason, place the treadmill against a wall. If possible, place it in the corner of a room where there is a wall in front (or back) and on one side. Make a barrier around the one of the exposed sides using cardboard. The barrier does not have to be sturdy, but it should stand upright and show your dog that it is not a way out. One side should be left open for your dog to enter and exit the treadmill. Being surrounded on all sides may also add to his fright.

Dog Collars

Other items that need to be prepared include his leash and his favorite motivator. If your dog normally walks on a harness, then use the harness for training. The same is true for a collar and leash. You should also grab his most loved treat, whether it is food or a favorite toy. Rewarding your dog for good and desired behavior is always necessary when training.

Slowly introduce your pet to the treadmill. If you use the treadmill, then keep him in the room with you when you are using it. He needs to get accustomed to the sight and sound of the machine. Take time placing him on the treadmill, and let him take his time in exploring the equipment. After he has had a chance to check things out (this could take a few minutes or a couple of days), then attach his harness or leash and place him on the treadmill. Never tie the leash off on the treadmill, because a fall could be dangerous. Hold the leash in your hands at all times; you should always have control over your dog. Set the speed to a slow walk. It's a good idea to use a stopwatch to time the training. Since you will be increasing the walking time each day, then it's important to be able to accurately judge the time. Let him walk for a minute or two, and stop the treadmill. Give him a treat for his good work, and then start it again. Once again, let him walk for a couple of minutes, then turn it off for the day. Repeat this process each day, allowing your dog to stay on the treadmill for an extra minute each time. You can slowly increase the speed; but, when increasing the speed, decrease the time so that your pooch can get accustomed to the new movement. Remember that training can take a while, so you may spend a few days just introducing your pet to the machine.

A walk or run on the treadmill should never replace your dog's daily routine. Depending on the breed, some dogs need large amounts of exercise. When an outside walk isn't enough, then a treadmill can be used to expend the extra energy. If it is raining outside or you are unable to go outside for whatever reason, then the treadmill is a good alternative. However, just because the treadmill is a quick fix does not mean that it should be used as the only form of exercise.

Training a dog to walk or run on a treadmill is possible; but, like all training, it does take time. Take your pooch's safety in mind before you start the exercise program. Once your dog is comfortable with the machine, then he is probably ready for his first walk. Start slow, and increase the walking time each day. Once your pup is ready to run, then the time should be decreased, and the process should start again. Before you know it, your pooch will be a treadmill pro!

House Training Your Dog - Getting it Right the First Time, in No Time

Need some help to House Train your dog? Check out these 3 simple tips

1) How To Toilet Train A Puppy

Dog Collars

This task can be very easy, or very hard depending on how well you train your puppy. A very important tip on toilet training your puppy is not to rub their face in it, that wont achieve anything.

I suggest you use the newspaper method, where you start with having newspaper in a large area where your puppy would be, and when your puppy goes to the toilet on it, then you praise and reward your puppy. Make sure you reward and praise your puppy when it goes to the toilet outside too. I suggest you keep treats in your pocket when you have a new puppy. When your puppy learns to go to the toilet on the newspaper then reduce the size of the newspaper covered area, and then closer to the door, then have a small piece of newspaper outside as well. When Your pup learns to go to the toilet outside then take away the newspaper inside away. I suggest you then repeat this for at least 7 days, I am sure after 7 days your puppy will be toilet trained. Its good idea to take your puppy outside for the toilet at least 2-3 times an hour as they only have small bladders. And also after eating is also a good time also

2) Dog Barking

Dog barking can really be difficult to train with some breeds of dogs, some will bark all the time, and be very frustrating. What you need to do first is to find out what your dog is barking at. Is it barking at another dog for example, or maybe a neighbours cat might be teasing your dog on the fence.

So what I suggest you do is look at your dog and see if they are wagging their tale or not. If they are wagging their tale, they are just playing, if its upright and rigid, your dog is serious. What you need to do is tell your dog firmly "NO", and when they stop reward and praise your dog. Repeat this several times until your dog knows you want it to stop barking. But don't put it off barking, its good if strange people have come to your house or yard your dog barks, as this might scare away burglars.

If your dog continues to bark, you need to make sure they have toys to play with. They might just be bored. If this doesn't work I would look at getting a citronella collar to stop your dog from barking. These should be only used until your dogs learns not to bark for no reason. This really is a last resort tip

3) House Training Older Dogs

It really depends on much training your older dog has had. Maybe you need to use the newspaper method as we suggested with puppies. You need to let your older dog know what the rules are inside the house. Like where they sleep, and not on your bed in your room. Also our dogs are not allowed in the kitchen, which stops then from going through your bin.

House training Older dogs can be harder as they have been trained one thing, and then you need to re-train them your house rules. Maybe it would be good if you can close doors at first until your older dog learns where they can and cant go. Remember training a dog is mostly from praise and reward technique.

I hope these 3 simple tips can help you, if not we have a great opportunity below to train your dog with a great online course

Raw Foods That Hurt Your Thyroid

Have you heard of goitrogens? A Goitrogen is a substance in some foods that prevents the thyroid gland from working correctly by blocking the uptake of iodine. Iodine is essential for the production and activation of thyroid hormone and is one of the main minerals that helps speed up cellular metabolism.

Goitrogens get their name from the term "goiter," which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland lies just above the collar bone in the neck area. If the thyroid gland is having difficulty making thyroid hormone, it may enlarge as a way of trying to compensate for inadequate hormone production and can be seen or felt as a soft pad about 2-5 inches in diameter on the neck, usually on one side but occasionally on both sides.

Dog Collars

Goitrogens can induce hypothyroidism and goiter. I bring it up this month because often diet foods contains goitrogens. When eaten in large amounts, the dieter wonders what they are doing wrong and why they are not losing weight.

More than four cups/week of the following foods--in the RAW form only--will interfere with your thyroid gland function. You can eat as much of these foods cooked as you want to--except tofu and soy products which we will talk about later. The foods are: Brussels sprouts, cabbage of all kinds, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, peaches, pears, rapini (a vegetable similar to broccoli,) spinach, strawberries, radishes, rutabagas and turnips.

Other foods that have goitrogenic activity are soybeans (tofu), pine nuts, peanuts, millet, and rapeseed (Canola Oil.)

Goitrogenic foods are typically high in sulfur (especially the Brassiform family of plants such as kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kohlrabi and broccoli). Sulfur, copper, and iron interact with each other and need to be in perfect balance for everything to work correctly. So, some researchers think that when you eat an excess of sulfur, it competes with iron and copper and can cause anemia. This brings up a good question because LOTS of people are on MSM, Glucosamine sulfate and Chondroitin supplements lately which are all high in sulfur.

The main component in soy causing thyroid problems are isoflavones. Genistein is a soy isoflavone marketed as a hormone substitute for women and appears to reduce thyroid hormone output by blocking activity of an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme is responsible for adding iodine onto the thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones must typically have three or four iodine atoms added on to their structure in order to function properly so this enzyme is pretty important. Most goitrogens are inactivated with heat, but there is some evidence that isoflavones in soy are not heat inactivated.

Ask you can see, this stuff gets pretty complicated. We fix one thing in our world and several other challenges pop up!

While many hyperthyroid people try to limit thyroid output by restricting their iodine and eating more goitrogen foods, this strategy can backfire. Iodine restriction causes the thyroid to increase in size (goiter) in an effort to filter more blood to get more iodine. When iodine is then re-introduced to the diet or accidentally ingested, the thyroid now grows even larger than before because now it has a larger capacity to do so!

Therefore the consumption of goitrogens to control hyperthyroidism is not a good strategy. It is better to increase foods high in copper as well as increase copper's effectiveness to normalize the thyroid function. After that, the body will tolerate iodine without increasing thyroid hormone production.

Why is preventing thyroid disease so important? 2005 statistics for this disease show:

o Hypothyroidism affects over 11 million Americans (1999 statistics.)

o If untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to myxedema (retention of fluids under the skin) and eventually coma, which has a mortality rate of 80%.

o Nearly one out of 50 women in the United States is diagnosed with hypothyroidism during pregnancy.

o Six out of every 100 miscarriages are associated with thyroid hormone deficiencies during pregnancy. This seems to be the biggest thing I see in my own practice.

Foods that stimulate the thyroid gland include: caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate,) avocado, coconut, and saturated fat. An overabundance of these foods in your diet are not good either.

I think the best way to handle these kinds of problems is to find out what the core cause is, correct that, minimize what you can, eliminate what you can and repair the damaged thyroid cells with protomorphogens and glandular supplements. If the client prefers to go the medical route and take drugs for the rest of their lives, the best bet is to get on a thyroid drug that seems to work and stay on it. Switching brands or changing protocols is just another bag of worms and causes even more problems. Armour thyroid seems to be the best drug for most of my clients.

Alternative therapies that seems to be working: A few minutes of heat applied to the thyroid gland for several months also helps. Some people also need a great mineral and vitamin program. One huge problem I see coming up is that we are exposing ourselves to excess stress from our busy lives and to lots of electromagnetic fields. Plasmas screen TV's, computer monitor screens, microwave ovens, cell phones and cell towers are a huge drain on the system and really disrupt the hormones.

I will say that once people get on thyroid medications, they seem to be on them for the long haul. It seems to be too much for them to drastically change their lifestyles. They can't seem to stick to a program that is working. They want to test the limits of it and end up crashing and going back on drugs. Thyroid hormone dips and peaks are just too stressful on the body to try to wean off thyroid drugs for most cases.

The Chinese Shar Pei, Fighting Dog of China

The Chinese Shar Pei was at one time called the "Chinese Fighting Dog". It is most likely that it originated from a cross between the Mastiff and the Chow Chow and various indigenous breeds. In actual practice, the Shar Pei served several purposes.. It was used in china as a "pit" fighting dog, for entertainment and sport and also as a hunting dog and a herding breed and a watchdog. The dog originated, it is believed, in the Han Dynasty and the many statues of that era which depict the fierce fighting dogs with the scowl on their faces are believed to be representations of the Shar Pei.

The exceedingly loose skin that is the hallmark of the breed was its biggest advantage when pitted against other dogs, there was so much skin that it was difficult for a dog or any animal for that matter to get a grip or do serious damage to any vital organs. Eventually their use as a pit fighting breed diminished, because they simply did not ever posses the mentality or attitude to be a fighter. Most Shar Peis appear, to this day, to be rather disinterested in other animals.

Dog Collars

In the 1940s, when the Communist Party came to power in China, dogs as pets were considered to be "decadent bourgeois luxury" and the breeding of dogs for pets was eventually completely banned. Many of the breeds of China very nearly became extinct during this period. A few remaining Shar Pei specimens somehow made it out out to the West at some point and the breed has been gaining in popularity ever since.

The standard of the breed, as translated from Chinese, reads that the head should be "pear-like" and the ears "like a clamshell" . The nose is to be like a butterfly, the face like that of a grandma, the legs like the shape of a ham, the back like that of the shrimp, the tail like that of a wire, the body like that of a fish...and so on. Suffice it to say that the Chinese Shar Pei bears little resemblance to any other breed. Indeed, the wrinkles alone are unique to say nothing of its strange looking face. It does possess the dark blue or purple tongue similar to the Chow Chow but that is about the only resemblance.

The Shar Pei can have eye problems, (known as entropion or ectropion) a condition where the eyelids roll inwards or outwards. This is a condition which can be corrected surgically. Because of the heavy rolls of skin and the wrinkles on the face even corrective surgery does not always have the desired result and this is a problem that owners should watch for. The Shar Pei possesses a rather "prickly" and harsh coat which seems to have the feel of the coat of a horse, actually. Its deep wrinkles and rather lumbering body remind one of the hippopotamus in some respects. The face of the Shar Pei seems to bear a perpetual "scowl" and it is part of the look of the famous Han Dynasty dog statues which were said to depict the original Shar Pei breed.

The Shar Pei has gained some popularity in the west because of its strange looks and rather endearing wrinkles as a puppy. However it grows up to be an aloof and independent dog, with a great deal of dignity and not necessarily the playful sort. It has however proved itself to be a beloved companion to many folks who treasure the dog for its quiet and dignified manner and for its noble demeanor.

Popular Small Businesses to Start For Very Little to No Money

Starting Small Businesses on a Shoestring

If you've been out of a job and the expectations of job openings in your area of skills look depressing, take heart. Opening your own organization may not be as expensive as you might believe with these strategies on how to start a booming small business at very little to no cost. With Angel Lenders and government and SBA help, small businesses are starting up and and those that have been losing profits during the recession are getting back on track.

Dog Collars

You need to comprehend what the marketplace and competition is for your manufactured goods or services first. If there is a community (or global) demand for what your organization offers, the next step is to create a business strategy. Without a business strategy or plan, you'll run the risk of failure early in the game. Be clear in your mind that you have a passion for your small business ideas as well. This is of great consequence if your business is to have many years of growth.

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan or model outlines the arrangement of your business, methods for marketing and promotion, the purchase of equipment, and what your business' objective is. A business plan is just that: a plan. You need to jot down all of your ideas and build your plan in an easily-understood format that will suit any intention, including for use in a lending situation.

Create Your Business Ideal

Besides having a business plan, you need to design your business model. Your business archetype should be geared around keeping cash outlay low without giving up quality so that the highest profits possible can be achieved. Although most businesses design this type of model as a course of action, a low- to zero-cost start-up business needs to be particularly creative since resources and supplies are limited in the beginning.

The Prime Principles for Starting a Business with Little Money

1. Set up a computer for online access (you may get a 'bundled' rate through your current residence or cell phone provider) and become acquainted with cheap or free software as well as free web-based applications.

Before buying anything, especially software-related, make sure there aren't free counterparts to be had by running a search and checking out Google Aps and the Microsoft website. Also take a look at open-source (free) software such as OpenOffice.

2. Determine who your buyers are, where your expertise lays and what folks are looking for.

3. Find out who your vendors may possibly be for services (like flyer distribution) or equipment (such as a printer) and if you can work out a barter agreement.

4. Create a website and have it hosted for free. There are many very high-quality free website editors that also offer free hosting from the same site. Run a search on "free website editor and hosting" to find a company you like and is easy to work with.

5. Become a member of local network groups and online forums, and set up a free blog through Blogger.com or other free blog site. Some network groups could charge small yearly dues but, on the whole, online network groups and forums are free. These are your free advertising methods so be sure to keep this in mind when considering any costs or dues.

6. Get free business cards from sites such as VistaPrint.

7. Become an affiliate for products and services that complement your business and promote them on your website and blog(s).

8. Read everything you can about the business you're in to increase your knowledge, know-how and expertise. Folks trust people who unreservedly give good advice and wind up buying from them.

9. Think about composing an informational booklet or how-to e-book and publish these for sale on your website and blog. Information sells.
While a few visitors may not pay money for a product, they might purchase your information on how to create their own product or how to do something without buying an encyclopedia. For instance, one small business proprietor builds and sells very small homes. When the recession hit, the home sales fell but the sales of the plans for the homes increased considerably and has kept his business going strong.

10. Try to set up a niche to make your business unique and set apart from the other guys. For instance, if you can't afford to breed dogs, you could think about creating dog treats, collars, and toys cheaply to market to breeders and sell at pet and craft shows.

Low-Cost Small Business Ideas

If you have no notion what kinds of businesses are minimal and economical to start, look at retail trends on the Internet. You might be surprised at how many fun and cool business ideas there are that can be started for very little money---if any money at all---such as:

1. Logo Design
2. Website Design
3. Office and/or Building and Home Cleaning
4. Interior and/or Exterior House Painting
5. PC Repair
6. Landscaping
7. Credit Rating Restoration Assistance
8. Pet sitting, boarding, and grooming (I know a woman who goes to residences to groom their pets and she beats all the competition. In fact, she has more work than she can handle).
9. Courier for Businesses
10. eBay Consignment Sales for Others

There are many more low-cost businesses ideas out there. As long as you have the passion and desire to get going with your business ideas and plans, you can create profits you can live off of.

Dog Guard Brand Pet Containment ( http://dogguard.com )

Dog Guard Brand Pet Containment ( http://dogguard.com ) Video Clips. Duration : 8.22 Mins.

The Dog Guard ( dogguard.com ) Brand pet containment systems have been successfully protecting pets from themselves for the past 20 years. With constant innovation, updates and testing, our systems are at the forefront of radio detection technology and provide pulse correction to your pet to prevent them from defying a pre-determined boundary. Pets are naturally inquisitive and it is our belief that they have the right to smell, track, run, jump and do whatever other things that pets usually do. Our systems have worked effortlessly on cats, dogs and many other farm animals as well. That said, humans have tried it as well with remarkable success but are warned against using it -- 'it' being unapproved yet for human use. Jokes aside, Dog Guard ( http ) has seen phenomenal growth over the years thanks to repulsive customer service, false promises and product failures of the competition including Invisible Fence Brand which is a market leader in terms of sales (because of their established name while leading in terms of lack of service, support, and quality). Now that people are aware of their failure they turn to us and hence our quiet growth. Taking our learning, we have put together a well defined product and service package with our nationwide net of trained dealers. Our products are still assembled, tested and sourced mostly with parts within the United States.

Barking Dog Collars To Stop The Constant Racket

Barking dog collars are useful to help you train your dog to control excess barking. All dogs bark. It's just a way of communication. And all barking is not bad. The bad part is excessive barking and barking at the wrong time, like at night. But a dog barking collar is best used in combination with other types of training.

Before you get a dog barking collar, spend some time observing your dog to try to understand why all the barking. It may be a simple matter to stop the barking without the expense and trouble of a collar. And remember that in most cases the dog collar will only stop the barking while it is on the dog. Dogs are smart. Take the collar off and the barking starts back.

Dog Collars

If you choose to get a dog bark collar, you can choose from three types.

The citronella collar is preferred by many. It works by spraying citronella oil near the dog's nose when the barking starts. The stinky oil stops most dogs from barking without harming the dog. Some dogs keep barking, but not many.

Another control collar is an ultrasonic collar. These devices emit ultrasonic sounds when barking starts. It's irritating to dogs but not to people. This works with most dogs but not all.

The final category of dog training collars is the electronic shock collar. Barking sets off an electrical jolt that only stops when the barking stops. Most dogs quickly learn to stop barking, but usually only works while the collar is on. Dogs learn quickly that no shock happens when the collar is off. Also, many dogs become fearful and crazy when subjected to shocks. Do you blame them? Many people see these as cruel. Since the citronella collars seem to work as well or better, citronella collars are a better choice.

How To Build A Dog Kennel

Building your own kennel unit is probably better than buying a ready-built one. By constructing one on your own, you can easily incorporate the necessary specifications that your pets need. This is not to say that commercially-available units are not equipped to handle your dogs. But if you have the right skill and knack for building things, then all you need to do before you begin constructing is know some important tips.

Building a Dog Kennel

Dog Collars

A dog kennel must be designed in a way that it follows the principles of convenience for you and comfort for your pets. These considerations will guide you through choosing the right construction materials and the layout and design of the kennels, and designing the ventilation and drainage systems.

With convenience in cleaning and maintaining the kennel in mind, you will be able to design the unit that will allow for ease in carrying out sanitation procedures. For example, you will choose steel wires instead of wood or plastic material for flooring. Steel is easier to clean and disinfect. It also does not splinter, causing injury to your pet.

Concrete may also be used for multi-tiered kennels. It is good, strong material that is also easy to clean. The only disadvantage is that insects and other parasites may live in the cracks that will form in time.

You can also customize the kennel to slope in an angle that allows better drainage. This way, you can just conveniently hose down dirt from the kennel compartments and not have to wipe or mop them clean. You can eliminate odor or keep it at minimum with more frequent disinfection.

With a customized kennel, you can choose any location that you want. Location is important in maintaining a kennel. Your dogs must not be in direct sight contact with people or moving objects to prevent them from barking and making noise that will disturb your neighbors.

10 Tips For Breaking And Backing A Young Horse

When I started writing my tips for breaking a young horse I thought I must be mad, what did I know? There are loads of experts out there all offering advice and I was just a humble horse owner, not a trainer etc. Then I decided that if my story helps anyone to have the confidence to work with their own horse then I believe they will find it a rewarding experience and it will be beneficial to both the horse or pony and themselves.

Backing, Breaking and Training a young horse. Well its something that we are told is best left to the experts and to some degree I agree, as you can do a lot of damage to a horse at such a young age, but with the right support and information I do believe you can make a good job of it.

Dog Collars

Its easy to say leave it to the experts but for most of us our horses and ponies are part of our family. We are the one's who are with them every day and the one's who have built up mutual trust and a bond with them.

I took a break from owning my own horse for about 15 years. Then found myself, in my naivety, being the proud owner of a 2 yr old filly. I fell in love with her, what more can I say, but she was 16.1hh and very powerful. A lot could have gone wrong. I did contemplate sending her away when the time came, to have her professional broken, backed and schooled. There were several problems with this idea though. Number one was the cost, I just didn't have the money to do that as the quotes I had attained were extortionate. Number 2 was this was my horse, I had spent hours and hours in the stable with her, bonding, grooming and just sitting there gaining her trust. I didn't want to send her away and lose all that. I knew she trusted me, she would follow me around the paddock like a dog, if I ran she would trot after me. Quite scary when you have a 16.1hh thoroughbred chasing you. I had never read a natural horsemanship book, but I realised that this was just what we were doing.

I also discovered she had never been walked off the yard, boxed, lunged or had a bit anywhere near her. I figured it was going to be a long drawn out process.

In reality I couldn't have been more wrong. Although I did take things very slowly I found backing her to be extremely straight forward.

I used a lot of common sense, sought loads of advice from local tack shops and the people on the yard, and read as much information as I could find including everyone else's tips on breaking a young horse. A lot of the techniques and equipment had evolved from when I had had my last horse. So I had to learn what to do with it again.

The things I learned and my 10 tips for breaking a young horse are:

1. Spend time bonding with your horse or pony, don't just rush into breaking it. You will need time to build up mutual trust.

2. Learn your horses moods. Learn their normal behaviour and pick up when something is wrong.

3. Spend time before you try to back your horse getting it used to basic commands, both on the lunge and long rein. Stand, walk, trot will be invaluable once your horse is first backed.

4. Introduce the bit slowly - don't just expect to put it in your horses mouth and leave it there for hours. Try a few minutes at a time over several week and get a bit suitable for a young horse. I used a copper key bit.

5. Introduce the saddle without girth, stirrups and leathers to begin with and remove again after a few minutes.

6. Before you even think of putting someone on your horses back get the horse used to wearing the saddle and bridle on the lunge or in hand.

7. When lunging the first few times in tack make sure stirrups and leathers are not flapping around and spooking your horse.

8. When you do introduce someone on their back ensure you are the one who is talking to your horse, after all you are the one who is built up the trust.

9. Try to get someone light to be the person who first sits on your horse. Start with them just lying over your horse and then gradually sitting. Make sure every movement of the rider is slow a fluid. Again make sure this isn't rushed and is done over weeks.

10. Take backing your horse or pony slowly, take the lead from the animal. If they are looking stressed or anxious or are really misbehaving stop. There is generally a reason.

It took me about 2.5 months to back my horse from only ever having a head collar on to gently hacking out with me on her.

I introduced everything bit by bit and talked to her constantly. It might seem a long time to some people but I was left with a well adjusted horse who doesn't get stressed or act up very often. She takes the lead from me and will attempt new things because I firmly believe she trusts me.

Make sure you are safe at all times and that someone is with you if necessary who is more knowledgeable but don't be afraid and take the lead. There is no excuse when horse breaking to be cruel, and remember animals including horses are not born bad, they react to what we as humans do to them.
