Eight Reasons Why Dogs Chew Their Tails

Unlike tail chasing phenomenon which is quite harmless, tail chewing can prove to be a little dangerous for your four-legged friend. Hence as a dog owner should you see this behaviour repeatedly in your dogs try to stop him by using methods best suited to both you and your dog.

Although there could be various reasons why a dog is chewing on him tail some of the common ones are listed below.

Dog Collars

1. Skin infections

This is the most common reason why your dog is chewing on his tail. Skin infections can cause discomfort and itching sensation on the tails hence to relieve that discomfort a dog will chew on his tail. Take your dog to a vet for proper examination of the tail and get the infection treated.

2. Wound/Injury

Sometimes while playing a dog might injure himself which becomes a cause of irritation and discomfort to him and to get rid of that pain the dog will either lick his tail or chew on it. This will worsen the situation, hence if you find your dog chewing his tail, talk to him in a soothing voice to calm his nerves, and then try to see what the cause of tail chewing is. If it is a wound clean it with lukewarm water and cotton and take your dog to the vet for treatment.

3. Docked tail

Tail docking is a procedure whereby groomers or vets cut the nip of the tail of the purebred dogs to conform to a breed standard. However, sometimes what happens is that while tail docking some of the nerves is also cut which induces pain in that area thus causing discomfort to the dog and thus making him gnaw his tail. Talk to the vet for the best possible advice on this.

4. Fleas/ticks

Fleas or ticks are another reason that your dog is chewing its tail. Examine the tail and watch out for fleas and ticks and spray some anti-ticks powder after thorough grooming of your dog. This will soothe his irritation and he will not chew on his tail.

5. Fractured tail

Tail fractures are very common in dogs, especially in dogs with big tails. Tail fractures happen when a tail gets stuck in a door, or someone steps on it accidentally. It is another very common reason why dogs chew on their tails. Take your dog to the vet for a treatment before it becomes bad.

6. Hunting instinct

Dogs are born hunters and it is this instinct which makes them chase their tails and if and when they finally catch hold of it to chew on their tails. However, as a pet owner you should remember that while tail chasing is not dangerous for your dog but chewing his tail is. So make efforts to stop this behaviour by getting your dog to wear a collar.

7. Compulsive behaviour

Some breeds of dogs are prone to tail chasing and tail chewing. The result is a vicious circle wherein a dog chews on his tail to get rid of irritation, however, chewing results in more irritation, and thus increased chewing. You can talk to the vet regarding it and put a collar so that he is not able to chew on his tail.

8. Previous trauma

Another reason why your dog is chewing his tail could be because of some previous trauma or wound he suffered on his tail. Sometimes the wounds heal but the pain remains and it could be this pain that causes your four-legged friend to chew on his tail. If you have just bought a puppy inquire about any trauma or wound that the dog has suffered so that you are better equipped to deal with his tail chewing phenomenon.

In all these above mentioned reasons the common thing is irritation in the tail. So if your dog is chewing on his tail remember that there is some irritation or pain that your dog is trying to get relieved off. So now that you know it is the irritation that causes your dog to chew his tail the next step should be to identify the cause of that irritation.

Plastic Cone Collars Vs Soft E Collars

Often after surgery our pets may require a device to stop them from gaining access to their surgical area. Or on occasion, our pets may need something to deter them from licking, biting or scratching at a chronic sore spot. One such product that is widely used today by veterinarians is the "E-Collar" or Elizabethan Collar.

Where did the name Elizabethan or E-Collar come from? The term Elizabethan Collar comes from an article of clothing called "the ruffs", which was worn around the neck of women in England during the Elizabethan times (1558-1603). The "ruffs" were very elegant but very stiff, which prevented these women from full neck movement. Our current day pet manufactures must have thought if an elegant article of clothing could prevent a woman from moving her head freely, why not modify the design to be used on animals.

Dog Collars

Many of today's E-Collars are made of very hard plastic. You can be certain your pet will not be able to reach his stitches or hot spot, when he is wearing this cumbersome device. For that matter, he will not be able to do much of anything else. The archaic design of the plastic cone collar impedes your pet's vision, it causes them to bump into things, they may trip while attempting to go up stairs, it will also deter them from eating or drinking and they will not be able to lie down comfortably. Not only will your pets get stressed out wearing one of these products, often we hear that pet parents are equally stressed out by seeing their pets struggle during their recovery period.

Some pet manufactures have come up with an ingenious method of doing away with the hard plastic cone collars. They have figured out a way to offer an alternative which is soft, flexible, comfortable and effective. The advent of the Soft E Collar has revolutionized the way veterinarian's care for their pet patients. While many veterinarians are taking advantage of these relatively new designs, many remain steadfast with offering the old plastic cone collar. Perhaps, some of these veterinarians don't realize there are alternatives or just maybe they are set in their ways.

If your pet is scheduled for surgery, ask your vet in advance if they carry the soft e collar. If they don't tell them there are many alternatives to the old plastic cone collar. You or your veterinarian can purchase a soft e collar from a manufacture, a pet retail store or an online pet supply store. They would be more than happy to provide you with advice as well as their alternative surgical collar. Keep in mind, any device that is placed around an animal's neck is foreign to them and they will try to find a way to remove it or get at their stitches or hot spot. Surgical collars are only meant as a temporary solution to your pet's situation.

Ultimately, you and your veterinarian will know what is best for your pet. But we strongly suggest trying the more humane soft e collar first. Your pets will Thank You.

Pet Tracking Devices

It was the Saturday morning of August 20, 2004 and my two kids saying that they couldn't find our cat Nala anywhere waked me up. I didn't pay much attention, because it was common for her to find a new hiding spot and sleep there for hours.

Hours later we realized she was really missing and we started to search for her. We looked all over the house, inside the closets, behind furniture, and then we got outside and looked on the trees, in the playground, around the pool, everywhere! We placed flyers around the neighborhood, she was never found.

Dog Collars

Now I ask myself, how many of us have gone through that experience and think we don't have an alternative to those flyers?

Well, we do! Pet Tracking Devices, thanks to the miniaturization of GPS receivers and mobile phone modems even they can carry devices that allow them to be tracked by the owner. There is not yet a great choice of devices, but this probably will change rather fast and even though all actual (August 2004) existing devices are too heavy for domestic cats. It is believed that 2005 will bring several solutions for this problem. But if you own a dog, this may be a solution.

GPS Pet Tracking devices consist of a GPS receiver and a GSM modem. In some of the models data, sent to the secure website via a GSM network, can be accessed by the owner directly or through a call center. With other devices you simply call the telephone number of the GPS-GSM dog collar with your mobile phone. The GPS receiver in the collar calculates the position of the dog and sends the co-ordinates immediately in a SMS text to your mobile phone. Other models work as a wireless, electronic pager device that easily and remotely monitors the location of pets via the Internet anywhere in North America. The locations can be reported to email, pager, cell phone (as text message) and website.

The prices of GPS Pet Tracking devices start from 9.99, but there are some inexpensive solutions such as radio tracking, which works in a similar way to the find button on your telephone, you press a button and the device on your pet's collar emits a sound to alert you on the location.

Missing a pet can be as painful as missing a family member, so take precautions and keep your pet protected at all times, and if your budget allows, consider acquiring a GPS Pet Tracking device it is the most effective tool available today, hopefully in a few years a tracking chip can be implanted under your pet's skin, much like the pet identification chip, but until then, keep your pet safe!

Dog Obedience Collar

Many dog trainers and owners will use dog obedience collars, but it is important that you take a look at the dog training collars available and which is right for your dog.

These are the commonly used dog obedience collars:

Dog Collars

- Choke Collar
- Prong Collar
- Head Collar
- Harness
- Electronic Collar

A choke collar is generally made of link chains and it is designed to gently choke your dog's neck when pulled. However, it is important to gently tug as you can hurt your dog if not use properly.

A prong collar is said to imitate a mothers teeth when she corrects her puppies. This type of collar has medal prongs that work similar to a choke collar. Once again, this is to be used carefully and it can harm your dog.

A head collar is safer to use. Your dog can still bark, eat and drink while wearing a head collar and it resembles a muzzle. This type of collar is best used on dogs that pull.

A harness is a kind of "body collar" that goes around your dogs chest and you attach the leash to the back. This collar is safe to use and great for any kind of dog and helps reduce the neck strain when your dog pulls.

Lastly, electronic collars are also known as shock collars and these are used by sending a gentle shock to your dog. The shock is controlled by a remote and this type of collar is usually used by trainers that have more experience.

In general, your dog may only need a harness or head collar, if you are considering using a choke collar or electronic collar make sure you consult with your vet or with a professional dog trainer to make sure it is the right choice for you and your dog.

Keeping Your Dog Out of the Trash

Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors can sometimes cause problems depending on what you have in your yard. One common item that your dog will destroy is your trash, or garbage bags. There is a reason why a dog does this; it is searching for a prize, which is food. Sometimes your dog may want something different to eat and the best place to find free food is the garbage. A dog does not know that it is not allowed access to the garbage because the garbage seems to be there for it. For example, when you put dog food on the ground for your dog to eat, it happily eats it, so it thinks the garbage is there for the same reason. There are a few safe and not so safe ways to stop your dog from tearing your garbage bags.

The easiest way to stop a small dog is by getting a trashcan with a lid and a lock. If you get the kind with a lock, the dog cannot knock the garbage can over and make the lid come off. If you do not want to buy a new garbage can, there is another effective way to handle this problem, just use some bleach. Get any kind of bleach from the grocery store and pour it into your trash bag after you put in some trash. You do not want to pour it directly on bag, on the outside or the inside, because the dog may eat the bag to break into it. After you pour about ¼ cup of bleach into the bag, place the trash bag in its normal spot and wait until your dog goes to it. Once the dog gets a smell of the bleach, it will get far away from the smell in the bag. If these methods do not work for your dog, you can always hide the trash from the dog until the garbage truck arrives.

Dog Collars

If you have some free time, you can set your dog up and teach it a lesson about tearing your trash. Busy people come home to trash that has already been ripped by their dog and after seeing this, they yell at their pet. The problem is that the dog does not know why its being yelled it; it has to be yelled at while it is doing wrong. Whenever you get some free time, set your trash out as usual and wait until your dog bites, then tell it to stop. This method will take a while, but the dog will get the idea over time.

Some people have also used the mousetrap method, which involves putting a mousetrap into a garbage bag upside down. This method works by startling the dog after the trap goes off, however this method is not safe. A dog's nose is very sensitive and if it somehow is snapped by the trap, the dog's mood is going to be greatly affected. Although people claimed that their dog has never been hurt, it is still dangerous and has a risk.

Another effective, but harmful way, to keep your dog in the yard, away from your trash and even off the street is by using an invisible electrified fence. You should really think before you consider buying this type of fence, because if it is not used properly, it can scare your dog. Someone once tried to get their dogs comfortable with the new invisible fence too fast and did not read the directions. Instead of putting the collar on the lowest setting for minimum collar shock, this person used the highest setting. After doing this, the dogs went to the shock zones and were shocked and remained scared to leave the yard for days. Invisible fences are not for everyone, so if you have the cash, buy a normal fence to keep your dogs in the yard instead.

Keeping your dog in the yard and away from your trash is quite easy depending on your dog. You can use a garbage can with a lid and lock, bleach, or just hide the trash. You should seriously think before you use mousetraps or an invisible fence because these methods can hurt your dog.

Does A Unique Dog Collar Qualify As A Safe Unique Dog Collar?

So are you looking for the safest dog collar around? Well if you are then you have to determine how safe is safe? I know I'm playing with semantics here but I think you get the picture on the issue of safety.

You can never be safe enough. Ultimately control of your dog through voice commands is the ultimate control that you can have. But it does help having a dog collar whether it's unique or not that will help you get your message across to your dog that they should obey your commands.

Dog Collars

This article will explore some unique dog collar varieties that are on the market today.

Snap around choke collar...Here's a unique dog collar that is one size only. You retrofit the collar to your dog's neck and it snaps into place.

The collar is made to fit snugly and tightly around the neck but gives no leeway to the dog whatsoever. The collar is made to fit high up on the neck so as to be as far away from the windpipe as possible.

This is to prevent permanent injury to the dog when you give an attention jolt to it. With this type of unique dog collar requires less effort to get the dogs attention when you give it a correction pull.

Head collars...Talk about unique dog collar, this one has got to be top of the list. Head collars come in a variety of colors and sizes.

There are many names that people call these head collars but it comes down to this as a training aid. These head collars fit around the dogs head with a leash attachment under the muzzle.

This type training aid is used for dogs with non aggressive tendencies but just need a little direction in there lives. You must be careful though to let the dog know that he has to learn the moves you want him to make.

You can gently guide the dog to follow you or you can pull him in the direction that you want too. If you end up with too much pulling then the dog will become accustomed to being told what to do, that is being dragged in the direction that you want him to go.

What has he learned? The dog has learned that you will take him to where you want him to go by force. Hardly a training aid but rather a forced march type of drill.

Well I think we've explored some of the unique dog collar types and that you have imagined which one you want more information on.

Just make sure that whichever dog collar you select that you do have complete control of your dog at all times when in public because everyone around you and the dog will feel safe in any type situation.

How to Make a Dog Coat

The manufacturing of a dog coat and other apparel has become the fastest growing industry for several years. With the continuous demand of dog apparels their prices are becoming expensive also. Even Gucci and Ralph Lauren are into designing dog clothing and accessories.

If you go to a local pet store, their prices for a simple dog outfit, small dog coat, and winter dog coat can be a little pricey considering the material used and the design. To save yourself some money, try making your own dog clothing. It is very simple and any dog lover could try making this project at home.

Dog Collars

Here are the materials you will need to make dog clothing: Fabric, scissors, thread, small buttons, sewing machine, ruler, tape measure, pen or marker, pattern paper, and any accessories you can add. All these items are cheap. The trick to sewing fabulous dog clothing is how you make it.

• Measure your dog from his neck to the end of his tail. The fabric you will buy will depend upon the size of your dog and the weather. If it is a small dog then you can sew a small dog coat. If it is winter season then purchase a thicker fabric to create a winter dog coat.

• Create a design into the pattern paper using the measurement of your dog as your guide. Once you finished designing, cut the pattern paper.

• Pin the pattern paper into the fabric and use the pattern paper as your guide in cutting the fabric. Make sure that you have allotted at least ½ inches. Use these extra inches to sew all edges of the fabric to make sure that it does not ripped apart. It is important to do this instruction before continuing to sew the entire dog clothing.

• With the help of the pattern paper, mark the fabric where all seams match or where the collar should be attached or where you should place your buttons, and the like.

• Once you have done marking the fabric, sew the dog clothing together by following the pattern's instructions.

• After sewing the pieces of fabric together, attached the buttons on it. For small dog coat and winter dog coat use buttons that are big and sturdy.

• To make it more fashionable you could add up some accessories on the back part of the dog clothing.

These steps can be easily accomplished once you start putting them into action. When you are done with these steps you will realize just how easy it is to make your own dog coat.

How to Build a Log Bed - Things to Consider in Building a Log Bed

It's pretty to learn how to build a log bed. Though you need to have some supplies and a simple plan beforehand to make the building process easier.

I always find this kind of bed somewhat charming and cozy so when there was a point that I had the spare logs to build one, I immediately made a trip to the hardware store and give a shot at building a log bed.

Dog Collars

Based on my experience, there are things you need to keep in mind when building this kind of bed. At the top of my head are:

SIZE

You can build a log bed around the size of your available logs or customize it to the size of your mattress or maybe even the size of your available space. That's the beauty of learning how to build a log bed, you get to customize it to the way you want it.

TOOLS

To build a log bed you need to get some tools in hand. There are some tools which can easily be found right in your own tool box like a chisel and saw while there are other tools which you have procure as this mainly needed for refining of wood.

Some of these tools are:

Tenon Maker

Tenon maker is to a log as pencil sharpener is to a pencil. Tenon maker comes in varying capability suited for the different sizes of logs. Sure, you can make do without a tenon maker but that require far more effort and time.

Draw Knives

Draw knives can be a straight knife which is used for stripping wood or it can be a curved knife which can be used for peeling. This tool is specifically used to peel and strip the bark of the logs and of course, it can also help shaping the log in whichever design you desire.

Bit Set

I'm talking about the bit set specifically used in cutting wood. This may be used with a hand or electric drill.

DESIGN

It would do well if you have a ready design beforehand. A good bed plan proved to be a tremendous help personally when I was learning how to build a log bed. After having made the decision as to the size of the bed, the plan has helped me with its step-by-step instruction with some pictures thrown in to avoid some confusion.

If you are searching for information about Dog barking collars then this video may be of assistance. There are numerous dog barking collars available on the market, and this list is not meant to be exhaustive. The various brands of dog barking collars, which include (for example) Innotek, SportDOG (or Petsafe) & Dogtra. The ways in which the dog barking collars work in 'correcting' the barking of the dog, also varies. Some dog barking collars will emit warning tones, which are adjustable, when the dog barks. Other dog barking collars will spray citronella or lemon when the dog barks. And other dog barking collars emit a mild 'pulse' or 'shock' to the dog when it barks. These are very low, and similar to the devices, such as TENS, that are used for pain relief. These are intended more as a distraction than a punishment. There are also dog barking collars which emit a combination of sound and pulse. While there are numerous methods of 'correction' used by the collars, there are also numerous methods of detecting the barking used by the dog barking collars. Some dog barking collars simply have a sensor (for example, a microphone) which detects the sound of the barking. These types of collars could also be triggered by barks from other dogs. There are also dog barking collars that use a vibration sensor which detects the vibrations in the dog's throat, when barking. And then there are dog barking collars which combine the sensors, and have both the sensor to detect sound and ...

How to Help Someone Mourning the Death of a Pet

Have you ever witnessed a friend or neighbor distraught over the death of a pet? If you have never owned a pet, or considered having one, were you surprised to see someone crying? Actually, such a response is just as normal as when a close friend or loved one dies.

Here's what you should know about helping someone who is mourning the death of a pet since there is great sorrow involved that can go on for long periods of time.

Dog Collars

1. Just as in the death of a friend or family member (and most animals are considered part of the family), grief is to be expected due to the degree of emotional investment in the object of loss. Emotional investment means caring and concern; it is love in-depth. Only the mourner knows the depth of that investment. Sometimes pet grief is more intense than the grief associated with the death of a loved one.

2. Give permission to show emotion by something you say or do. Give the person a hug and say, "This must bring deep hurt" or "I'm so sorry to hear that." Use the name of the pet when you can. Recognize how close the relationship was between the pet and the mourner and encourage him/her to talk about the illness or what led up to the death.

3. Offer to be of service in some way. Bring food over to the home, if appropriate. Go with the owner to the pet cemetery. Provide transportation. Simply showing you are aware of the impact of the death will be of great help to your friend.

4. Review the relationship the person had with the pet in a gentle caring way. Ask questions regarding how long the pet was part of the family and where he/she came from. Encourage story telling involving what the pet did or did not do. All of this will give you a better idea of what the loss means to the person.

5. Grief over the death of a beloved animal is just as individual as grief over the death of a family member. There will be a wide range of differences, some demonstrative others very reserved. Do not judge the depth of grief by outside appearances. Respect all expressions of grief. Some individuals will hide their grief over fear others will ridicule their behavior. Be sure to include children in learning about grief and death through the death of the pet.

6. Keep in mind, especially with older adults living alone, some companion animals may be the only family the person has. Thus the animal is one of the few or perhaps the only one the mourner received unconditional love from.

7. If other losses have preceded the death of a pet, it can make the pet death more difficult to deal with. For example, if a pet owner has had to give up driving, has had a debilitating illness, has had friends move away, or experienced the death of a loved one, these or other losses can easily result in bereavement overload. The mourner will especially need a nurturing and understanding community at this time of transition.

8. Guilt, anger or depression can also be associated with pet loss. Guilt is the most common reaction, especially if the owner had to have the pet euthanized, was not there when the pet died, or did not recognize the illness until the later stages.

9. Help create or suggest a memorial. A picture, toy, or collar can be used as a way to honor or remember the pet. An object belonging to the animal can be encased in Lucite or placed on a shelf that can be easily viewed.

No longer do pets play a low key role in homes throughout the country. Rather, they have come to fill the role of companion, supporter, and old friend. Consequently, the death of a pet can become a major grief experience for the young or old alike. Become sensitive to the role the animal played in the life of the family and you will be better equipped to provide ongoing support and appropriate remembrances that will be immensely helpful in the months ahead.

GPS Collars Can Help You Track YOur Pet and Keep Him Out Of Danger

GPS collars can be used to track your pet should he or she ever get away. This tracking can be exact to about one meter or three feet. The term GPS means Global Positioning System. These days, GPS chips are so small that they can be hidden in any pet collar, or even implanted underneath your pet's skin

Once activated GPS dog collars can send real-time data directly to a portable receiving station in your house or car. In fact, new technology has made it possible for GPS Collars to send information to cell phones and laptop. If your pet has gone far, you can send information about his location in real time to police or fire departments that will find him and keep him safe until you arrive.

Dog Collars

Never lose your pet again - get a GPS Collar for him or her. It feels and looks like a regular collar, and is completely safe and harmless to your dog or cat. GPS collars can even be made for birds and specially fit ones can be put on some reptiles.

GPS Collars have other uses as well - for example, when driving or hiking with your dog, the collar can help both of you know where you are. You can put the small GPS cat collar in your pocket and use it to know where you are even without your pet present.

There are too many stories about dogs wandering off into dangerous areas, or cats getting out and fighting with animals much bigger than them. Slowly these stories are being replaced by tales of dogs and cats wearing GPS collars and being rescued before they get in harm's way. Add your pet to the list of animals who were saved by a GPS dog collar or GPS cat collar.

Learn what farmers already know in order to track expensive cattle, and what many parents have learned in order to track their kids, use GPS technology for piece of mind!

GPS chips can provide a pet owner with a sense of security and comfort, but they should never take the place of all other preventative actions one would take to ensure their pet's safety. These GPS chips might augment what you already do, but they should never take the place of your current methods of watching over and protecting your pet.

How Do Dog Training Shock Collars Really Work?

I had to train my chocolate lab because he is allowed to walk freely with me on my neighborhood walks. I decided to try shock collars. I started out with an inexpensive model that had a range of about 300 feet and had seven levels of sensitivity.

The literature that came with the product describes the shock that is delivered as something like static electricity. I accidentally shocked myself one day and that is exactly what it is. The sensation you feel is just like the static electricity you get on a cold dry day. It is mildly unpleasant as you know if you have experience touching someone and receiving the shock from static electricity.

Dog Collars

I used this to train my dog to listen to me when I gave a command and it made the training much easier. I have since graduated to a model that had 15 levels of stimulation as well as a tone which only the dog can hear and delivers no stimulation. You can also set the tone to sound when you deliver the stimulation so the dog with the shock collar anticipates the stimulation when you use the tone only feature.

I have two labs and whenever we go on our walks they are free to roam but the dog training shock collars bring them back quickly if they venture to far or other people or animals are approaching. Most of the time I don't even deliver any stimulation and just use the tone. Actually just putting the collar on turned off is very effective in a lot of cases especially if there are no other dogs to chase. The dogs are well trained now and the only reason I even use the collar is just in case the cat or squirrel runs by.

Making Your Pooch Fashionable with a Rhinestone Dog Collar

In the past, chic pet accessories such as the rhinestone dog collar were so hot, however some people thought they were too gaudy for animals and thus their popularity declined. However, with the renaissance of flash and bling, rhinestone dog collars are becoming a hot item once more. People are now recognizing that their pooches also deserve to be stylish in their own right.

Dog lovers treasure their pets very much, and one way of showing high regard for their pet is by giving them something that makes them stand out and look so special. Most dog owners express their pet's individuality through their collars. There is a wide variety of dog collars to choose from each one catering to different preferences. But the most special among them all is the rhinestone dog collar, which truly makes any pooch look like a million dollars.

Dog Collars

Rhinestone dog collars are usually made of leather, cloth, nylon, and even metal with rhinestones embedded on the leash. These tiny, sparkling stones make any color shine, complementing the dog's eyes and coat. The materials used for rhinestone dog collars are usually very flexible, following the contour of the dog's neck. It can be a colorful band that is similar to the dog's owner's tennis bracelet.

Some rhinestone dog collars can be specially designed to spell out your pet's name in flashy gems. This is definitely a prettier alternative to the usual dog tag that just has your pet's name engraved on a small sheet of metal.

Before, rhinestone dog collars are only worn by female pets, but with the emergence of metrosexuality, even male dogs can wear rhinestone collars without much problem. For those who still prefer their dogs to maintain a butch image, there are also rhinestone collars that come in rugged designs that complement their pooch's macho impression. Examples of these are those black leather collars with a few big rhinestone studs that are well-spaced.

Rhinestone dog collars may come with buckle or snap-on closures. Whatever kind of rhinestone collar you choose, you must make sure that it closes securely so that it would not fall off easily. Snap-on closures are usually convenient, especially for small toy dogs. However larger dogs usually need more security which only buckled collars can provide. It is thus important to test whether the kind of lock the collar you are buying would withstand the strength and size of your pet.

When you are considering to get your pet dog a new rhinestone dog collar, it is important to make sure that the collar fits well and the gems are properly secured. You would not want Fido to be able to remove the collar easily and then chew or choke on the sharp little stones. You should check the collar regularly to see that there is no damage with the material and all the stones are in place. Always watch out if a stone falls off so that you can quickly keep it away from your dog's reach.
An easy way of measuring the fit of your dog's rhinestone collar would be the finger test. If you have a small dog, one finger should fit snugly between the dog's neck and collar. For medium dogs you would need two fingers. Large dogs would need three fingers. If the rhinestone collar is too tight, it can choke your dog and kill it, but if it is too loose, it can easily fall off and get lost.

Other than these reminders, rhinestone dog collars are not really that difficult to maintain. You just need to clean the collar once in a while to maintain the brilliance of the tiny gems. You would probably just need water, with a little mild detergent to remove stubborn grime and stains. Missing pieces might not be inevitable so it is wise to keep some spare gems to replace those that would eventually fall off.

In these times when being fashionable is already considered an asset, dogs can keep up with their owners with the accessories that they wear. Perhaps the best way to glamorize your dog is to have it wear a rhinestone collar. It serves the purpose of regular collars but adds style and flair to your most beloved pet.

The Disadvantages of Using a Head Collar

Even though head collars have many advantages, they have some distinct disadvantages as well. To begin with, if you get too carried away, the dog may become dependent on the tool, and not apply the training that it has received without it. Sometimes dogs can quickly identify the differences between their regular collar and the head collar, and will adjust their behavior in accordance to which one they are wearing.

Also, there are some canines, in particular the ones that may not be used to wearing a head collar, who will dislike it so much that they will continually paw at it, scratch it off or continue to pull on it excessively. If you are trying to use one with an unruly dog that is doing this, your best choice is to keep the dog moving and distracted until they get accustomed to wearing a head collar. You can also make the dog sit by pulling up on its as another correctional move.

Dog Collars

There is also one smaller issue with the head collar. A lot of people will react to and treat it like a muzzle, when it is indeed not. This causes people to react to the dog as though it may bite them. This isn't a huge setback, there are those out there who find it troubling.

Overall, if you plan to use a head collar for training, please do the following. Read the directions that come with the collar first. Have a game plan for dog training, and make sure to use good solid training methods in combination with the collar. Just using this tool alone is not a life saver.

Using Dog Training Collars to Train Your Dog

If the expense of sending your dog to Dog Obedience School is preventing you from training him, here's another option. You can train your dog yourself, as long as you obtain the right dog training tools. It doesn't have to cost you a fortune to make sure you have a well-behaved and mannerly dog.

Although there is a variety of tools available for training a dog, the best choice is usually a dog training collar. For the do-it-yourself dog trainer, there's really nothing better. These aren't just the ordinary leather or stretch-mesh dog collars that don't do much more than hold an ID tag and clip to a leash. Let's look at two possibilities.

Dog Collars

A training collar is definitely going to cost you more than an ordinary collar. Be prepared for that. Dog training collars are usually made from very fine materials, designed to outlast years of wear and tear. In addition, these training collars may come equipped with various unique add-ons that help you encourage your dog to cooperate with the training.

Probably the least expensive dog training collars you can find are the various Canny collars. These Scottish-designed collars are manually operated, consisting of a conventional collar with a buckle fastening for security, and a leash that attaches to a soft, strong slip line that fits over the dog's nose. Its effective pressure-and-release system makes your dog realize pretty quickly that when he pulls ahead of you it puts pressure on the bridge of his nose, while walking sedately beside you relieves that pressure. To discourage other undesirable behaviors, you can pull back yourself and exert the pressure on the dog's nose.

One of the good things about Canny collars is that there is virtually no risk of choking the dog, since the leash attaches from behind to the slip line around the nose. But you need to understand that this training device is really only focused on correcting your dog's behavior when he's being walked on a leash. It won't do anything about other behaviors, like barking, digging, or jumping up on people.

A very successful training device is the electronic dog training collar. This provides a very low electric shock on the back of the dog's neck when the dog does not respond correctly to a command. The shock is only about the same intensity as the static-electricity shock you get on a carpet in the winter, so there is absolutely no danger of harming the dog. It's more of an irritation than a pain. These collars can be quite expensive, however, depending on the features. The cheapest can run at more than 0. The popularity among professional dog trainers of this type of training device attests to its quality, so you might think of it as an investment. And you can be certain it will give you a well-trained dog, with no risk to his safety.

Whatever way you decide to train your dog, either by doing it yourself or by using a dog trainer you will need training tools.

Electronic Flea Collars - Do They Really Work

Electronic Flea collars may be the newest weapon in the war on dog fleas. Dogs have been mans companion for thousands of years. Dogs serve mankind in ways that cannot be duplicated by technology. Unfortunately the parasites that our dogs carry have plagued mankind as well. Fleas are a constant irritant to man and dog as well as vector for disease. In the past the best way to get control fleas on your pet was to wash and comb them on a regular basis. The development of pesticides like DDT went a long way in treating our dwellings and animals for many years. However many of these pesticides also had side effects or were damaging to the environment. In addition many of these pesticides were ineffective on fleas.

In the early 1960s time release pesticide technology was married to plastics to make the modern day flea collar. They were hailed as the cure for all flea problems. They did a good job of reducing flea bites on most animals that were under severe and constant attack. They did not solve the problem of flea infestations in homes or kennels. In addition the chemical caused skin irritation or dermatitis on many animals that was worse than the flea bites. Also the collars were most effective only on the front half of the dog causing some people to place a second collar around the dog's waist and belly. One thing the new collars did was to kill the dreaded ticks. Tick will crawl the highest point on a dog before taking in the blood meal. This mean they will try to crawl past the flea collar on the way to the dogs head placing them in contact with the insecticide. This makes the collar a great way to stop ticks but leaves much to be desired when it comes to controlling fleas. All of which cause many people to consider using an electronic flea collar.

Dog Collars

Before you lay out the money for an electronic flea collar you should consult with your dogs Vet. Most Vets will tell you that the most effective method of controlling fleas is through the use of topically applied flea medication. Most dog owners are familiar with Advantage, Frontline and the Program brands of flea medication. They all use a chemical growth regulator methoprene that prevents flea larva from developing into an adult. These medications have been shown to be very affective in solving flea problems. In fact a dog that has the medication on it can literally remove all the fleas in a house over a month long time period. Adults bite the dog and then drop off to lay eggs then die. These eggs hatch and the larva die. So why would you consider using any other method of flea control?

Many dog owners are concerned about the side affects of methoprene on their animals and as a result are looking for flea control alternatives. Electronic pest control devices are divided into several different types. Some use high pitched or ultrasonic sound to repel all insects and spiders while others use devices that produce an electromagnetic field to repel pests. Recently a new technology was developed that using ionic air cleaning. Basically they all claim to drive the pests away from the area that they are placed in. Electronic flea collars use the same technology to achieve to drive the fleas away. The bottom line question is does these device work? Entomologists and other researchers have determined that these electronic flea collars do not perform as claimed. Electronic flea collar manufactures have not, to date, provided any scientific proof that their products perform as claimed. They all use of customer testimonials as a selling point for their products which future makes their claims less than credible. It appears that it is far better to use the topically applied flea medications to protect the health, comfort and well being of your dog. Given the facts I would assert that it is unwise to depend on any electronic flea collar to protect your dog from fleas.
