Bloodhound - Dog Breeds

Breed group: Hounds

Weight: male: 90-110, female: 80-100 lbs

Dog Collars

Height: male: 25-27, female: 23-25 inches

Overview

Bloodhounds are an ancient dog breed, and its origin is not entirely known. It is however known that they have been perfected by monks in Belgium. The Normans first brought these dogs into England and the United States. Bloodhound is hunting dogs, but they love tracking more. Seeing that these dogs are scent hounds, they will loose interest quickly and rather follow the scent. These dogs are often used as companion and tracking dogs, especially to track down game, lost children and criminals.

Temperament

The Bloodhound is a gentle, tolerant, dignified, easy-going and adorable dog. They love to show affection, and are very good with children. They are good natured companion dogs that will allow children to climb all over them. The Bloodhound is very fond of attention, especially from children. Children should be taught however to not hurt these dogs as these dogs will not object at all. This breed full of energy, and are very lively especially when still young. These dogs have a tendency to be disobedient, but are very gentle in general. Bloodhounds will get along with everyone, and will welcome wanted and unwanted guests without warmly. Some will however bark to let you know when strangers are in the vicinity. They will get along fairly well with other dogs and pets in the family - they do however have a tendency to drool and snore quite a bit. The Bloodhound is able to go after any scent, even a human scent. This is a very uncommon ability in any dog. It is known that these dogs can follow trails that are over 100 years old. They will also stay on a trail for over 100 miles because they are so determined. These dogs should however be fenced in, otherwise they will wander off. Most Bloodhounds can not be walked off the leash.

Care

The Bloodhound does not require a lot of maintenance, but it is important to clean under the folds of their skin to avoid dry and itchy skin. They should also be brushed often to remove any excessive and dead hair, as they can shed a lot on a seasonal basis. This breed has long and droopy ears, and it should be cleaned frequently to avoid ears that are infected and painful.

Training

The Bloodhound should be trained in a firm, but also gentle manner. They can be stubborn, but owners of these dogs should be patient.

It is very important to be consistent when training these dogs, as they will know how to get around training by their pitiable looks. Although these dogs are not very obedient, they are very calm animals. They will often make their own decision rather than following the orders of their trainers.

Health problems

Although this is a fairly tough breed, they do have a few health conditions potential owners should be aware of such as hip dysplasia, gastric torsion, and elbow dysplasia, inversion of the eyelids and also excessive skin folds and wrinkles.

Dog Bite Statistics by Breed - Shocking Information

Many people are concerned with the prospect of dog bites. Although the ideal canine companion should be mild or even tempered, there are just instances when a dog can attack either after an unthinkable provocation or for other unknown reasons. Some dogs are trained to attack, but these dogs must be carefully handled and looked after at all times; otherwise, the law dictates that the dogs should be destroyed. As such, there are no established dog bite statistics by breed in the country, other than those privately gathered (and sadly, unverified) by independent sources. The truth is: many cases of dog attacks remain unreported, with the injured parties not even bothering to acquire medical assistance, for fear that the dogs might be destroyed; or for fear that the owners of the dogs might do something more damaging; or even just fear of being reprimanded (as with the numerous cases of teenage injuries.)

Besides, there are also no reliable estimates as to how many dogs are in the country, or the number of individuals per breed. Although the law dictates that a license for each canine pet is acquired by their owners, there are many of those who adopt strays or breed dogs without any regard for permits and such. Additionally, only the seemingly extreme cases of dog bites are reported by the media. It is said, that in some counties, dog bites occur on a very regular basis that people around are desensitized with the topic. And lastly, many people who are attacked by strange dogs usually do not know precisely what breed of dog they were facing. By the time the identification would have been made, the offending animal would have escaped or would have been destroyed already.

Dog Collars

However, here are some facts given out by the CDC or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that you might want to know:

1. According to hospital records in 1994, more than 16,000 people were bitten or attacked by dogs that year; none of which were fatal but a good 6% of the victims needed one or more forms of reconstructive surgery. In 2001, that number rose to an alarming estimate of about 80,000 people nationwide, and 22% of the those needed extensive hospitalization and reconstructive surgery. And from that 22%, one-third of the victims were always children 7 years and younger. Infants or children who have yet learned to walk are the most vulnerable, constituting almost all of the cases of the victims who were under 7 years of age.

2. Pit Bulls have the most notorious reputation for biting people. In 2005, it is estimated that about 82% of all the dog attacks in the country were from this breed or from Pit Bull crossbreeds. This number may have been partly due to the fact that the population of Pit Bulls as home pets is also on the rise. Experts are estimating about 3 million to 10 million registered and unregistered Pit Bulls are now living in the country.

3. Other known dog breeds that have a lengthy record of dog bites and attacks are: Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Chow Chows, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Huskies, Rottweilers, and Saint Bernards. Rottweilers rank the second most dangerous dog in the CDC's list after the Pitt Bull.

How Do I Train My Labrador Retriever To Not Pull When Walking Her On A Leash?

I hear this question all of the time "How do I train my Labrador Retriever to not pull when walking her on a leash?" from family and friends that have this beautiful breed.

It is no secret that Labrador Retrievers are a very energetic and rambunctious breed that requires a lot of love and attention. It is also no secret that they give back 110% of that love and attention making them one of the best breeds to have as a family pet.

Dog Collars

It really bothers me to see folks struggling with their Labs and getting frustrated with them while doing something as common as a walk in the park, it's not their fault that we take such a high spirited dog and try to domestic them. So I decided to go online and do a little research to see if I could find the techniques used by other owners in order to answer the question presented in this article.

I found many answers to this question from Yahoo's Answers and what I found seems to be solid advice that can be followed by anyone now owning or those interested in obtaining such a beautiful dog.

Listed below are several good options for preventing your Lab from pulling while on a leash.

You should really sign up for a Labrador puppy training class. For older dogs, Labrador Retrievers Obedience Training is a good idea. Buy something called a Gentle Leader; it is a collar that basically goes around the neck right behind the ears (not like a regular collar a bit higher) and another loop around the muzzle. It doesn't keep her mouth closed but when you pull it pulls their muzzle. Do not yank the dog but instead a short swift tug and release will help the dog feel that quick snap causing her to slow down and wait for you. Leave the gentle leader on her in the house to get used to it even it's not attached to any leash. When she is walking and she pulls ahead, stop and call her name. Wait for her to come back to you and give her a pat and a treat. If she looks at you but doesn't move try stepping back excitedly and she should come. Do this on every walk. Keep the leash very short while you are walking (like 6-8 inches). This keeps her from being able to gain the momentum to pull. As you let the leash out just a bit, if she pulls, STOP, wait until she quits pulling to continue. Each time she pulls either stop immediately or turn and go the opposite direction. Part of the problem could be the collar placement. Most collars lay at the base of the neck, which is where the hard muscle is. The only problem is that with rambunctious dogs like labs is that they can pull hard and be unfazed due to the strength of that muscle. Try fitting a collar higher on the neck, behind the ears. There is much less muscle there so she gets less leverage to pull. It also gives you, the owner, greater control over where she goes and how much momentum she can get. Hold the leash so that when your arm is comfortably at your side, the dog has a little bit of slack. This keeps her close to you without choking her. Then, if she decides she wants to go one way or the other, she meets the resistance of the collar and leash before she's more than a few inches away. When she pulls hard, correct her by pulling back on the leash. You don't have to jerk her off her feet, but pull sharp enough that she gets the hint. At the same time, use a sound that will get her attention, like warning a child. Keep her close to you and do not give an inch. If she pulls harder, stand your ground and make her sit down. This will stop her advances further and helps to bring her attention back to you. She will get the point rather quickly and will be walking nicely before you know it. Before leaving the house, make sure you go out the door first. If she tries to pull you because she has seen something she wants, command her to STOP, sit and stay, a firm "Leave it" should help. Repeat it often. Sometimes adding weight to her will calm her down like a back pack or vest with pockets of water bottle on each side.

It will take about a week or so with this type of training before successfully walking her in public, if anyone wants to pet her while you are doing this just explain that she is in training and most people will understand and wish you good. I hope this advice will help make your Labrador a better walking partner.

Dog Travel: Safety Checklist for Your Dog on the Road

Many dogs love riding in cars. This is a chance to be out and "feel free". With the on going trend now for families not to consider their vacation complete without their dog in tow, it is becoming more common for our dogs to travel with us.

Some dogs may enjoy riding right away. Others may not. If she is a puppy or a reluctant older dog, gradually introduce riding to her. You can start bringing her on short rides and make the trip very pleasant.

Dog Collars

In your car, have your dog sit or lie down in the back seat. Avoid letting her roam around the car while you are on the road as she will likely fall if you suddenly put on your brakes. And if you are driving a two-seater car or a pick up truck with only the front seats available, have your dog lie down next to you in the front passenger seat. Never let your dog ride at the back of a pickup truck. In the event of a quick brake or accident, your dog is certain to be thrown out, injured or even killed. If you are driving a convertible, never drive with the top down when your pooch is in the car so she won't be thrown out when an accident happens.

You can check out some dog seats from pet stores and online shops.

Here are some guidelines for you when bringing your dogs for a ride:

1. Do not leave your dog in the car especially if the weather is hot. If it's cool outside, be sure to leave your windows slightly open so she can get some fresh air. However, if you leave her, make sure you keep an eye on her on the car to make certain that she will not be stolen and that she is alright.

2. Dogs love to hang their heads out the window and feel the air as it rushes by. Though we would not want to take away from her this enjoyment, make sure you do not permit your dog from hanging her head out the window. You would never know if some blowing debris and bugs can injure her eye or sting her.

3. Never drive with the windows open enough so that the dog could fall or jump out. You can open your window, an inch or so, so she can have fresh air to sniff.

4. If you will be taking your dog on long trips, take water along and stop at least every couple of hours to walk your dog.

5. Be sure you have your dog's collar, identification tag, and leash on and that the leash is in your hand before your dog starts to get out of the car.

Most of the people who own dog will, sooner or later, have to look for the safe and humane way to stop excessive dog barking. But there are many dog barking collars and it might not be an easy task to decide which anti barking device is the best.

How to find the best barking dogs collar?

Dog Collars

Finding best no bark collar doesn't have to be daunting task. Let us first look into what actually the "best" means. Is it the most expensive, most advertised or most sold item? While all this could mean that product is good it really shouldn't be on the top of our list.

Since every situation is to the certain extend specific we should start by focusing first on why we need this collar. Some dog owners might only have to work on excessive dog barking while other will have much larger list to include dog jumping, running away, not coming when called, digging just to name the few.

A lot of people claim that spray commander is best anti barking device because it has been designed to address many unwanted behaviors. Indeed this anti bark collar can be activated remotely which makes it very good training tool. Two young males, Sam is first and Mack is second on the video. They are brothers that got off to a really, really bad start with limited socialization and absolutely no training as puppies. Basically given up on due to their bad situation. But, both dogs are doing wonderfully using a very balanced approach to training them using both leash and collar corrections and rewarding correct behavior with food and toys. Both dogs are in wonderful homes now with highly motivated owners that work well with their dogs. I suspect that both dogs will be titled in Schutzhund when they are old enough. They are about ten months old in this video. Additionally both dogs are strong protection dogs and doing well with their tracking training.

Beginning a Cadaver Dog

When you first start to train a cadaver dog, you will want to have a good amount of basic obedience training already accomplished. Your dog needs to know how to behave on a leash. He needs to know how to sit, especially if that is the "alert" that you will want him to use, or to "down" (for the same reason). Some handlers prefer that their dog do a bark alert at the indication of cadaver, others prefer that their dog will scratch at the cadaver. If this is the case, your dog will need to know the verbal commands to perform these behaviors. Your dog also needs to know how to follow directional signals to a certain degree, in other words when you say to your dog "check it out" and indicate to him an area that you want him to search, he should already know what those words mean.

It is best to start a Cadaver Dog who already has attended at least one obedience class, who is bonded to you well enough that the majority of the time he will focus on what you want him to perform. A good test for this thing called "focus", (which is a highly important aspect of a good search dog) is to try this little trick. Say your dogs' name, when he is distracted. Do this often. Say your dog's name, when he is not distracted. Do this often too! If you can count on his looking at you within 3 seconds after you say his name, ninety percent of the time, then you are ready to advance to training for cadaver.

Dog Collars

Depending on the breed, most dogs are not ready for this kind of focus until they are past the age of six months. In addition, some dogs will appear to be quite focused but at about 8 months old it all goes out the door and they become like wild adolescents and never "listen" to a thing you say. If that happens, cut back on the training exercises and concentrate on obedience and skill work, mixed with a lot of socialization and long walks.

Do not start your dog on cadaver until you also have a reward for him that lets him know that he is absolutely the most wonderful dog in the world and that you are very very happy with him. This must be a reward which really lets him know, in no uncertain terms, that he has done something great. You need to know your dog well enough to know what it is that will "turn him on" and be ready to give him that special thing. Whether it be praise and affection or a special toy or a food treat, have it ready.

Then get out your cadaver. For this first introduction, you will need only one cadaver scent article. This can be tissue, blood or teeth. Bone and Hair are not usually sufficient in the very beginning. Lay out several articles on the floor, or outdoors in the grass, wherever you want to start. Use common everyday articles, things that are not highly interesting to the dog and perhaps with which he is not familiar. These can be any household item, as long as it is not a special toy that your dog loves, or your own articles of clothing. Examples are; a coffee can, a hammer, a plastic spatula, a kitchen pot, you get the idea. You should scatter about six or seven of these articles around in a 50 foot square area. Amongst them have ONE cadaver item, in a glass salt shaker with the lid open so that the scent will come out through the holes. Never handle cadaver with your bare hands, you should have prepared this cadaver and placed it in the shaker and handled the shaker with plastic gloves!!

Then allow your dog, on lead or loose, to wander into this area of mixed articles. Chances are he will sniff at a few of these things and especially the chances are good that he will sniff at the cadaver. The instant he touches the cadaver, reward him with hearty praise and give him his treat. Do this several times, in different locations and using different items. Gradually add in more than one cadaver scent. Only reward him for sniffing or touching the cadaver.

Plan to conduct this exercise at least ten different times before you advance to the next stage, which will be to train the alert that you want him to give to you before you give him his reward. Only after he is giving a good "alert" on this exercise do you want to progress to hidden cadaver and different search areas and more complicated scenarios. This is going to take awhile. Be patient. In the end, careful training and consistent training will produce results.

Dog Harness Versus Collar For Small Dogs

Should you go for a collar or a dog harness? If you're caught in this dilemma, don't worry. There are actually millions of dog owners who are in the same position as you. The good thing is you will now be enlightened as to why a dog harness is always the perfect choice over the dog collar, especially if you're taking care of small dogs.

The Huge Disadvantage of Dog Collars

Dog Collars

Dog collars are ideal when you're training the animal for tricks or drills, or when you want to attach a dog tag, which is actually mandatory in some states. However, there's one huge problem with them: they could potentially harm the delicate necks of small dogs.

Dog collars, specifically the halter types, can be truly uncomfortable for your petite furry friend. As a matter of fact, if they are worn too tight, they will not only hurt the throat, but can also restrict them from breathing properly. Moreover, the more that these small dogs will pull away from you, the more that dog collars will bury deep into their skin. Worse, if a leash is attached to the dog collar and the pet suddenly turns to one side, it could result to a very serious neck injury. Alternatively an accidental jerk on the lead could damage their spine.

Why You Need to Buy a Harness

For health reasons, protection, and comfort, harnesses are always the best choice for your small dogs. First of all, it can relieve your small pet from neck strain, which usually happens whenever he moves or runs around too fast and you're trying to control him. Since the harness is fitted comfortable around his chest, every time he pulls away, the weight is evenly distributed through out his shoulders. There is no risk of throat injury, and no more of the choking sound.

A harness is also very comfortable to wear, since the materials used are incredibly soft. They don't cause any chafing or matting in your dogs' fur. The most popular dog harnesses are made of soft mesh, nylon, or suede. What's more, they are very easy to clean and are highly durable. They can last for several months or even years.

When it comes to fashion, there are many designs that you can choose for your dog harness. You can also easily adjust the size of the harness the more that your small dog grows big. The belt is highly adjustable, and the buckles are strong and durable.

A good quality dog harness won't only give you the kind of control you want over your small dog, but will also help you become a better parent to your pet. You can show him that you put great emphasis on his health, comfort, and style.

How Do You Microchip a Dog?

Every year more than 300,000 animals go astray in the UK alone. Most of them cannot be returned home because their owners cannot be identified. The lucky ones end up in an animal home.

Micro-chipping is the most effective way of identifying a lost pet. Collars and tags are essential, but they can fall off or become damaged. Technology has made it possible to equip your pet with a microchip for permanent identification.

Dog Collars

How is an animal Micro-chipped?

The microchip is inserted underneath the skin between the animal's shoulder blades, just below the base of the neck. This is done using a needle, and is similar to your pet having a routine vaccine jab at the vets. A microchip is often compared to the size of a grain of rice. Most are around 11mm in length. The process should not cause your pet any more pain than a vaccine jab at the vets, and, when done properly, most animals don't notice it's happening, especially when distracted with a piece of food! Some of the smaller or more sensitive animals may yelp or squeak but recover very quickly. The microchip itself takes less than 2 seconds to insert. You will then be asked to fill out the registration form which will take a further few minutes.

How does the Microchip work?

The microchip emits a radio wave that is detected by a hand held scanner (animal wardens, rescue center's, pounds, police, micro-chippers and vets are all equipped with these scanners). Should your pet go missing and get picked up by, or be taken to one of the above mentioned authorities, it will be scanned and the microchip detected.

If my pet has a Microchip, does he still need a tag?

Some microchips have been known to migrate from the area between the shoulder blades, but the instructions for scanning emphasize the need to scan the dog's entire body. If your dog has a tag this makes it much easier for the person scanning the animal as they will keep searching with the knowledge the chip may have migrated. When your animal is micro-chipped, you should be offered a collar tag, there is often an extra charge for this depending on the micro-chipper and/or manufacturer. The writing on the tag should state that your pet is identified with a microchip, and often has the microchip database phone number. Please note - it is a legal requirement to have a tag on your dog with your name and address; your phone number is also a very good idea and the easiest way for a finder to contact you.

Where are my details held?

The number on the microchip relates to your personal details which are held on a secure database e.g. Petlog® or Identichip® (The database will vary depending on the microchip manufacturer). The person detecting the chip will call the database to get your details and be able to inform you that your pet has been found.

How long does the Microchip last?

Microchips are designed to last for the life of a dog. They do not need to be charged or replaced. It is very rare for a microchip to stop working. For peace of mind ask your vet or local micro-chipper to check your pets chip by scanning it every 6 months or so. They should be happy to do this for no extra charge.

No method of identification is perfect. The best thing you can do to protect your dog is to be a responsible owner. Keep current identification tags on your dog at all times, consider micro-chipping as reinforcement, and never allow your dog to roam free. If your dog does become lost, more identification can increase the odds of finding your beloved companion.

Fix a Dog Allergy

Aside from needing their basic needs fulfilled, dogs may also need help regarding some health problems. Dogs are actually susceptible to medical conditions like allergies which the owner should quickly take note of and have cured to prevent the condition from worsening.

Making Your Dog Itch: Allergy Possibilities

Dog Collars

Allergies cannot be prevented unless the owner is aware of which allergens his dog is allergic to. Here are some helpful tips and hints to fix this problem just in case they come up.

Inhalant Allergy

Most common of these dog allergies is inhalant allergy. The most common symptoms are scratching of the genital areas, abdomen, armpit or face, and prolonged chewing and licking. Upon close inspection, the dog develops a reddish area caused by too much licking.

If you suspect that your dog has this allergy, then you must bring him to your vet. A veterinarian can diagnose this accurately through allergy testing.

Bacteria allergy

Bacteria can be another cause of dog allergy. Bacteria allergy (specifically Staphylococcus allergy) is not a very common condition. Only a few canines react negatively to this bacteria; most other dogs have become accustomed to it.

If your dog is allergic to bacteria, they can easily develop crusts on his skin or even lose some hair on the spot that he normally scratches. You need to bring your dog to a vet before the patches of exposed skin becomes infected.

Flea allergy

Flea, per se, does not cause the dog's allergic reaction but the flea's saliva is the main culprit. A vet or even the owner can easily figure this out.

If you see your dog scratching himself frequently, then you should check his coat thoroughly to see if he has fleas. If you see fleas, that's a pretty good indication that it's causing your dog's discomfort. Since there can be other causes aside from fleas, though, it's better to bring your dog to a vet and have him diagnosed and tested for allergies. If it's flea allergy after all, then you should ask your vet for his recommended flea shampoo and medication.

Food Allergy

Allergy to food is also possible. Manufactured dog foods are a combination of a variety of ingredients, one or a few of which can be causing your dog's allergies. Your dog may have this type of allergy if he keeps on scratching or sneezes a lot, vomits, loses control of his bowels, etc.

Diagnosis of food allergy can be quite difficult. You need to fix a different meal for a certain period of time to see which is causing the allergy. Thus, in one period, you can give your dog chicken meat. Then, on another the diet can be restricted to pork and so on and so forth. Should the dog develop an allergy at anytime a certain ingredient was used, you'll know that it's causing the allergy so you should avoid serving your dog this food again.

Contact allergy

This is an allergy caused by an object that the dog is in constant contact with. It could be his food bowl, his collar, or another thing entirely that's causing the allergy. Since this is the least common, you must rule out all other allergy causes. After that is done, start eliminating the things he is in contact with to isolate the main cause.

Letter to Your Neighbor Regarding Their Barking Dog

Many of us have been faced with the dilemma of a neighbor's barking dog and how we are to get the dog to stop barking. Solutions range from the extreme of calling law enforcement to the more personal conversation with your neighbor. Either way, the thought of having to deal with such an unpleasant situation is enough to make you sick from stress. How do you like that? You get stressed over having to stop your neighbor's dog from barking. Knowing that many people have to deal with this problem, much like I did, I thought it would be helpful if I shared a letter that I wrote to my neighbor. Hopefully you can cut and paste this into a word document and make some minor tweaks that better fit your personality. Here is the letter for your use...

Dear Neighbor,

Dog Collars

As I'm sure you are unaware, your dog has been barking throughout the day while you've been at work. I try to calm him down by talking through the fence to him. Unfortunately, this only seems to aggravate him more. I wish there was something I could do that would get him to stop barking. Since I work odd hours, I'm normally home during the day and need to get rest. I'm not sure if you would consider a bark collar or not but we need to find a solution to the barking.

I've had friends who have called law enforcement on their neighbors before informing them of the barking problem first. I am the type of person that would like to resolve the issue between us before ever having to consider that option.

I think a bark collar or a "Bark Free" Ultrasonic device would be two great solutions. My cousin uses the bark collar on his Labrador and the collar has worked wonderfully. He tells me "Disco", the dog, has been completely trained not to bark throughout the day with his collar on. Of course the bark collar might not be your first solution so I've also included the option of the "Bark Free" device. You simply put batteries in the device and it sends a high pitched sound once a dog starts barking. It will take a few days to train your dog to understand that the ultrasonic sound is being created because of his barking. However, once your dog learns that he is causing this high pitched noise (only a dog can hear), he will be trained to stop barking.

You've been a great neighbor and I'm hopeful that my two solutions to the barking problem will be something that you will embrace. Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you. I look forward to many peaceful day ahead.

Thank you,

Herniated Discs in Dogs and Treatment Options

What a Herniated Disc Is

The disc that sets between the spinal vertebrae ruptures when the dog has a herniated disc. When the disc ruptures the gel-like material on the inside of it seeps out. This material then can become hardened and calcified, which lessens its shock-absorption ability. Pressure can cause this hardened substance to explode or bulge into the spinal canal nearby, where the spinal cord is located. This is the process that is known as herniation. This can result in pain and elevate to feeling loss or paralysis.

Treatment Options for Herniated Discs in Dogs

There is more than one treatment option for the dogs when a herniated disc happens. If the dog is still moving then prednisone can be given to the dog. Treatment with this will lessen the swelling around the spinal cord which is causing the pain and making it unpleasant for the dog to move. This treatment can take the place of surgery sometimes. The dog should not however stay on this treatment too long because steroids like the prednisone can have negative side effects that can cause the dog problems.

The veterinarian could instead recommend limited activity and rest for the dog. This will decrease the amount of stress that dog's back is being put through. Of course this treatment and the prednisone are only for mild cases where the dog can still walk.

In the event your dog cannot walk or other treatments have not worked, the doctor will most likely want to operate. He will order various diagnostic procedures to be preformed first though. This surgery will help take the pressure off the dog's spinal cord which is brought on by the hardened gel and other debris.

A great percentage of the dogs do quite well with the surgery, if the nerve damage is not too severe and it is caught soon enough. Rehabilitation is also part of this treatment. Rehabilitation for dogs could involve exercises and underwater treadmills to improve muscular strength. This could also improve how the dog in functioning neurologically.

The major problem with herniated discs is that they can keep happening. As long as there is a healthy disc left it can become herniated. There are some breeds of dogs that have more of a tendency towards this problem than others. The body weight should be kept down in the dogs that are predisposed to this problem. Any dog is good physical health can recover from this problem better than one in poor physical condition.

Also instead of regular neck collars use the chest harness kind. The neck collars can cause stress on the neck. The dogs also should not have jarring motions happen to the back such as jumping off of the furniture.

When you are suspecting problems contact the veterinarian immediately.

Homemade Dog Doors For Your Pet

Do you have a hyperactive pet dog who loves going in and out your home? It is OK to have kind of pet but sometimes it can be annoying and disturbing for you to open and close the door every time your pet enters and leave the house. It can also distract you especially if you have many things to do. However, because of the dog doors that are very common nowadays, you do not have to limit the freedom of your pet anymore. You can already let them enters and leave the house anytime without interfering with your activities.

Dog doors vary depending on its type and style. There are a lot of choices which you can choose from. But if you have limited budget, you can also try to make personalized one. Aside from saving your money, you can create a more customized one using the design that you may prefer. First thing that you have to do is to measure the height, width and length of your pet to determine the right size of the door you are going to make. Purchase a dog door kit and trace out an outline on the door using a pencil 3 to 4 inches from its base on the dimension you have just gathered. You can then cut through your door on both of its sides around the outline you just made using a saber saw. Make sure you have selected the right blades of the saw to avoid ripping your wood door. After that, just pop out that piece of door and you are now ready to install the frame. You can screw the frame for the inside of the dog door into its place, and just do the same procedure with the frame for the outside part of the door. Just make sure that you must attach the flap outside door frame. Most of the time, it is usually made of plastic or just a piece of metal.

If you want to add more safety to your house, consider creating doors with security panel and a magnetic catch so the door flaps would not just blow open. Electric dog door would be a better choice compare to the usual manual dog doors in order for you to restrict other animals from entering inside your home. It may take a long time for your dog to learn how to use the door so be patient with them.
