Why Your Dog Won't Walk on a Leash

Dog owners can become easily frustrated when their dog won't walk on a leash. They see other dogs enjoying a walk with their owner, and they are stuck with their stubborn pooch that won't budge an inch. But instead of getting upset at your dog, you need to understand why this behavior happens. Here are the most common reasons.

Your Dog Doesn't Understand the Leash

Dog Collars

Most of the time, familiarity is the biggest issue with dog leashes. Your dog probably has not had much exposure to a leash, and thus it can be a confusing situation for him. Take the time to slowly introduce the leash to your pet. Let him investigate it (but not play with it) before putting it on. It is also best to let your dog wear a collar for a week or so before introducing the leash.

You Have the Wrong Collar

It is possible that the collar you purchased for your dog does not fit properly or otherwise irritates him. The best collars are made of lightweight nylon and should leave enough room for you to grab underneath it with your fingers. After integrating a new collar, be on the lookout for signs of skin irritation or wear marks that may indicate a problem.

Fight the Urge to Pull

It might seem natural to pull hard on the leash in order to coax your dog into walking, but this can have the opposite effect. Because pulling on the leash is an aggressive behavior, it actually triggers a response in your dog to pull back. This results in an endless cycle of reciprocal pulling that leads to nowhere. The better solution is to allow your dog to walk with the leash without tension. This lets him know that the leash is not a restrictive tool.

Be Patient

Your dog can sense your stress and anxiety and this can negatively affect your leash training. If he becomes scared or nervous then he is less likely to do anything but sit or lay down for fear of angering you. Proceed with a calm approach to leash exercises. If your dog stops walking, then you should also stop and gently encourage him to continue. Give him the power in the early stages until you can build his confidence in the leash system.

Understanding why your dog won't walk on a leash is the best way to correct problems. Try to determine what is holding him back and then work on fixing the issues. It may take a couple of tries, but ultimately you should be able to break this stubborn habit.

Wireless Dog Fences - 11 WiFi Dog Fence Pitfalls to Consider Before Reaching For Your Wallet

Excited about the latest and greatest new wireless and WiFi dog fences on the market? Considered buying one to contain a pet in your yard? Before you do... there are some important factors you will need to make particular note of when determining if a wireless dog fence is right for you.

On the upside... wireless and WiFi dog fences are easy to install, fast to set up, no wires to bury and they're highly portable. Wireless dog fences are ideal for flat plots of land like we have here in Wilmington, NC and large country settings without many obstructions, but they're not ideal for all localities.

Dog Collars

They are indeed faster to set up than a traditional underground pet fence because there are no wires to bury or attach to any fixed objects. To program your WiFi wireless dog fence, you place the wireless dog fence transmitter in the house, walk the dog fence receiver out to the outer perimeter boundary you desire, return to the base unit and save your settings. That does sound pretty easy right? "Easy" I've discovered is a relative thing when it comes to new technology.

If everything goes well during set up... yes it's easy. Setting up my home computer wireless router was supposed to be relatively easy in concept too, but it took a little trial and error, some "trouble shooting" guide reading, and system reloading to get it to work consistently. My Vonage internet phone set up was easy theoretically if all went well too, but it took a couple of attempts and still to this day (for whatever reason) I need to reboot the system to get it up and running again or I don't have proper service. My wired electronic dog fence? ...I just plugged it in and started training the dogs.

Because the wireless dog fence requires no buried wires, they are in fact, highly portable. (Underground dog fence transmitters can be moved from home to home as well, but you do need to have a second set of wire buried at the new location, or at least secured to the ground with landscape staples there. The dog fence transmitters themselves however can be moved simply by unplugging the antennae wires and power)

The wireless dog fences work differently than the underground dog fences in some important ways. Unlike the electronic dog fences that use buried wires laid out in a pattern that is customized to your yard and terrain, the wireless dog fences have a base station that sends out a signal in a simple circle pattern. You must place the transmitter in the center of this circle. Your dog or cat wears a receiver that constantly searches for this circular signal. If the receiver your pet is wearing loses the signal for any reason, the dog receives a warning tone and then a correction stimulation. Ideally this only happens when your dog leaves the circle you've determined is his/her safe zone.

Be certain the wireless or WiFi model you're considering is designed to NOT correct during power outage, or if battery back up unit fails. Remember, your dog receives a correction zap any time his collar receiver loses the base stations signal. Check also that there is a fast fail-safe shut off feature. Some shut off only after up to half a minute of repeated corrections! And make sure you charge the batteries each week if it's the rechargeable variety. They generally take 6-8 hours to recharge. If the base unit looses power, you may have only a half a day of receiver power because the dog's receiver will go into high gear to find that base station.

Because of their unique design, wireless dog fences are not practical in all situations.

Since most urban and suburban properties are rectangular, square, or irregular in shape, a circular safe zone for your dog may not be ideal. If you want your dog to be able to use the majority of your property, you may want a dog fence that can be laid out in straight lines as well as curves, circular patterns and around corners following your property lines.

Wired dog fences can be configured in nearly any shape and can also include additional "exclusion zones" such as a pool, flower garden or potting shed in the center of the yard to allow the dog full access to the entire yard, but not to these subzones. Additional zones can also be created with wired dog fences using just one transmitter to protect your dogs if they escape from the front door of the home accidentally; and also protects him/her in the backyard, but does not allow them to run around the house.

Another major consideration is the integrity of the signal.

Wireless units are ideal for flat yards without many obstructions. In order to work, the transmitter in the house must be within a "line of sight" of the dog. If you property has any steep hills or ditches, the dog could disappear from the range of the base station and receive a zap even if he's still in your yard.

According to manufacturers instructions, no radio signal can pass through metal, or may be reflected by any large metal object such as automobiles, water tanks, metal studs, metal buildings etc. The closer the metal object is to the base station, the greater the potential for unwanted interference and this will result in the reduction of performance of these WiFi units.

Here are a few other downsides to keep in mind if you're considering a wireless purchase:
Only 1-2 dogs can be put on the newest WiFi dog fences due to interference concerns, versus an unlimited number of pets on an underground wired dog fence system. Other wireless models do allow multiple dogs similar to underground pet fences, but have limited coverage areas up to a 90ft radius. Due to power requirements, battery sizes and weight of the receivers (twice that of some traditional wired dog fence receivers) some WiFi systems only recommend pets over 25 pounds be allowed on their wireless systems, others allow only pets over 15 pounds... what about your cats or small dogs? The WiFi transmitter base station must be in the heated portion of your home on a table, shelf and off the floor. This takes up space in your home and restricts coverage. Underground dog fence transmitters can be in the garage or crawlspace. If the base station is bumped, or moved by a child or other family member the coverage area outside changes too... your dog may wander into an area he was not trained to avoid, and thus receive a shock unfairly. Ouch! Wireless dog fence protection zones are limited to a 90 foot radius or 200 foot radius area. Underground pet containment systems can protect up to 50 acres in any shape desired. Some manufactures use contact posts that wear out. Rubber contacts lose conductivity over time. Those manufacturers recommend replacing them each time the rechargeable battery is replaced on the dog collar. According to set up instructions, if you experience interference with your TV or radio reception, you must experiment with new base station locations, different outlet plugs or call the dog fence dealer or an experienced radio or television technician for service. Special care must be given to the placement of the base unit in your home due to the "natural interference" of your homes walls and many obstacles. Place it in the back of the home for better backyard coverage and front of the home for better front yard coverage. And remember to not let it be moved once it's placed.

In summary, wireless and WiFi units are ideal for large, flat  properties without many obstructions. They work best if you want to limit your pet to a circular area surrounding your home. Other positives are that they're relatively easy to set up, fast to install, and are highly mobile.

The downsides are that wireless and WiFi systems lack layout flexibility, signal reliability and have limited coverage areas. If you live in an urban or suburban setting with a rectangular plot of land, or have a pool, flower garden or require other "exclusion areas", a buried wire system may be the way to go. If you have a yard bigger than a 90 to 200 foot radius circle will cover effectively, or it has uneven terrain, trees, outbuildings or other obstructions, a wireless outdoor dog fence is less than desirable.

Repairing an Invisible Dog Fence Or Other Underground Dog Fence (DIY)

Fixing a break in your Invisible Dog Fence or Underground Dog Fence is cheap and easy. You will periodically get breaks in the boundary line of your dog fence. You will know that the line is broken because the dog fence transmitter unit attached to your house will signal an error by either a flashing red light or a beeping noise. You will also notice that your dog's receiver collars no longer work and will not beep when you take them over the boundary line.

The boundary wire for your underground dog fence needs to make a complete loop, beginning and ending at the transmitter unit. When you get a break in the loop the signals cannot get through and the unit stops working. Our job is to find the break in the boundary wire and fix it. Before you start you need to remove the receiver collars from your dogs.

Dog Collars

Here are the tools you will need for this DIY voyage:

One 100 µH RF Choke (available from Radioshack (catalog number 273-102)) - .39 One waterproof wire nut (available from most home improvement or hardware stores) - .39 One AM radio - any portable AM radio will do, tuned to 600. One pair of scissors One Shovel or anything else you can dig with

Time: 30 minutes

There are two ways to find the break, we start with the easiest way:

Finding a Break by Visual Inspection

Most breaks are caused by someone running an edger, aerator or otherwise digging through the boundary wire. These breaks can usually be found by walking along where the boundary wire runs and looking for spots where there has been recent digging. Unearth the wire in these spots and check for damage. The most likely spots are where the boundary wire crosses your driveway or pathways. Also check that the boundary wire is properly connected to the transmitter box.

If you found the break, proceed to the section on fixing the break. If not, proceed to the following section where we will show you how to use an RF Choke to make the boundary wire 'sing' and reveal the location of the break to you.

RF Choke Method

The RF Choke will make your boundary wire 'sing.' We will be able to listen to this sound with the AM radio you have tuned to 600 and will be able to find the break by looking for the part of the wire that is not singing.

First switch off the transmitter box. Now, disconnect the two boundary wire leads that connect to the box. In their place, connect the two legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter box should no longer be signalling that there is an error.

Now turn the transmitter box back off. Take the two boundary wires and wrap an insulated section of each wire around different legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter should still signal that there is no error. Rotate the knob labeled "field width" on the transmitter box clockwise till it is at full power.

Now turn on the radio tuned to AM 600, and walk along the boundary wire. When you hold the radio near the boundary wire it should make a deep pulsing/throbbing noise, like Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh ... As you move the radio closer and further away from the boundary wire you will notice that there are some distances where the sound is louder and some distances where it gets quieter. As you walk around the boundary you will find a spot where there is no sound coming from the AM radio irrespective of whether you move the radio closer or further from the boundary wire. This is where you should dig up the wire and look for the break. It will be within three yards of the quiet spot

Now that you have done the hard part let's fix the break

Fixing the Break

Use the scissors to strip the wire on each side of the break in the boundary wire. Now insert the two stripped sections into the wire nut and gently twist until you start to get a bit of resistance from the wire nut. Now we will test to see if you have fixed the problem.

Return to the transmitter unit and turn off the power. Disconnect the RF choke legs and reconnect the boundary wire. Power back on the transmitter and there should be no error signal. If there is an error signal, look for another break, it is possible that there was more than one. If there was no error signal, bury the boundary wire you dug up. Reset the "field width" knob on the transmitter box to it's original setting and you are done. Congratulations you just saved yourself a house call from the local Underground Dog Fence company and a large bill!

Your Dogs Emotions - Things Every Dog Owner Should Know

Your dog is more similar to you in their emotions than in their mentality. Some of their emotional reactions are so much like ours, that we tend to humanize them. The dogs emotions are visibly expressed in his eyes and face, his ear and tail movements, his posture, and general behavior. Sometimes they are vocally expressed as well. Your dog can feel and express the same emotions as we do: love, hate, joy, sorrow, grief, anxiety, jealousy, remorse, anger, fear, and even more subtle ones such as distrust and resignation.

Pet dogs have an endearing tendency to imitate their owner's emotional reactions, which may not weigh much in an argument, but it certainly offers much in moral support. They are no more individual in expressing their emotions than we are. Dogs approach and seek contact with objects and beings that inspire friendly feelings, and avoid or shy away from those they fear. Often a dog will pretend not to see a person or animal he dislikes. A crouching position and a watchful eye mean that he has not yet made up his mind to trust or distrust.

Dog Collars

Some facial expressions are much like ours. Worried frowns, angry glares, adoring gazes, suspicious squints, questioning looks, seductive glances, humor, and even genuine smiles. A smile, accompanied by half-closed eyes and ears held low signifies intense pleasure. Dogs express their feelings through body language more so than facial expressions. A wagging tail and friendly grin are invitations to approach and perhaps make friends, while a snarl, a fixed stare, stiff, straight legs and tail are warnings to keep your distance. The question of distance is important to the dog because of territorial concerns and of survival instincts.

Dogs usually give voice to the emotions, and their meanings are generally clear. A happy dog gurgles or squeals with pleasure. A gentle whine says "please", and snarling is definitely hostile. Dogs yelp from pain or fear, whine from frustration or pain, and sigh for the same reasons we do. Puppy cries are easiest to interpret, they scream when they are too hot, whimper when cold, and protest loudly when hungry. Barking is usually done to attract attention or to work excess energy if the dog is constrained such as in a kennel. Dogs exchange information among themselves less by voice than by a wide range of facial expressions, body postures and gestures.

An owner who takes the trouble to observe his dog and pay him the courtesy of listening to him, can establish a simple two-way communications system with his pet. Canine messages are usually very elementary, as he asks much less of us than we do of him. "I'm hungry", "I'm thirsty, "I need to go out", or "Come with me", are among the messages he manages to convey very well, considering his limited means. His most eloquent utterance is perhaps the emotional gurgle or barks that mean to say, "It's about time you came home, I've missed you!"

Chic Italian Dog Names

So you just purchased an Italian Greyhound puppy or something even more exotic like a Neapolitan Mastiff or a Volpino Italiano, and you need a decent designer name for this little head turner, something that will match with perfect style.

Supposing this is a little male, some authentic names such as Agosto (venerable), or Zanipolo (little gift of God) might fill the bill. Other distinctive male names could include, Carlo (free man), Alessandro (protector/helper), or perhaps Ciro (comes from Cyrus the Persian ruler), or Pancrazio (supreme ruler).

Dog Collars

Not only are these names distinctive, but often times befitting, such as Zanebono (good one) or Claudio (lame one).

Some other great names for males would include: Angelo, Antonio, Dante, Dino, Emilio, Enzo, Enrico, Ermano, Fedele, Federico,Geronimo and Giacomo. Let's not leave out these beauties either: Uberto, Ugo, Taddeo and Santo.

Now as far as the petite female puppy goes, we have some equally chic female names, such as Aldabella (beautiful), or Bambalina (little girl). Other cool names include Venitia (mercy) and Zola (little ball of earth). As with the males, there are many such to chose from and some of my other favorites include: Amadora, Bianca, Trilby, Carmela, Esta, Felice, Jolanda, Lia, Phebe, Quorra, Rosseta and Vanni.

If you should happen to have both a male and female pup, how about naming them Fedele and Felice or Ugo and Vanni? Great names for great dogs go hand-in-hand. Some of these would also be perfect for the rescue you adopted from the shelter.

Dog Training - Invisible Fences

Many rural developments are springing up, developments, which are governed by "home owners' associations". Sometimes these groups insist on a ban of regular fencing because it will mar the beauty of their development. In such cases, some dog owners consider the installation of an invisible fence. Invisible fences consist of underground wires, which will carry a current when a dog wears a collar. The collar will buzz the animal when it gets too close to the fence. The theory is that this will stop the dog and deter him from going further. Sometimes this is effective and sometimes not.

There are certain details, which a property owner should consider before installation of an invisible fence. For one thing, dogs who are long coated may need to have the coat around the neck area shaved so that the electric current can make enough contact with the skin for the dog to feel it. Also, dogs whose bodies are so constructed that they have loose folds of skin (called dewlap) beneath the chin may also have fewer nerve cells in that region and may be less affected by the electrical current. For another thing, there are dogs who are completely unaffected, in other words, they could care less. They may get the shock but it does not matter to them because whatever it is that they want on the other side of the fence motivates them more than the shock deters them. Unless such a dog is trained to respect the boundaries through some other manner, the invisible fence will not matter.

Dog Collars

The age at which the dog is introduced to the fence is important. Animal behaviorists recognize that puppies have definite "fear stages" which will occur during certain periods. Usually for most puppies, this is around the eighth week and again around the eighth month of their lives. This theory has been well researched and documented. When a puppy is introduced to the electric or invisible fence, the owner needs to be aware of the puppy's fear stages and whether or not the dog is psychologically ready to accept such a shock. If the puppy is in a fear stage and the breed of the dog is also a breed, which can be quite timid the invisible fence can do more damage than good, traumatizing the puppy so much that he doesn't even want to be outdoors at all. Also, puppies who are naturally quite timid and submissive in their behavior, regardless of their breed, can react in much the same way. When the electric collar is on the puppy, owners must be aware that they should be present to watch for such adverse reactions and step in with positive reinforcement when the dog is stopping before it approaches the "zapping zone" of the electrical current.

There is another side of the picture to consider also. Invisible fences only work for the animal who is wearing the collar. Property owners with such fences often overlook the fact that their yards have no protection against possible predators or such dangers as packs of wild dogs, who have no barrier to cross to enter their property. Small dogs have been known to be attacked by predators who would not have been able to enter the premises if there had been a normal fence preventing their entrance.

In any case, people who are using invisible fences for the containment of their dog need to realize that using such a fence requires some vigilance and some training of the dog or it may not serve its purpose.

Do Bark Collars Hurt The Dogs?

There are three different types of dog bark collars that are very popular at the moment among dog owners. All of them work, but there is some debate as to whether these collars are ethical to use. If you have a dog that barks very often, then you must have all the information of these tools you can use on your pet.

Citrus Spray Collars

Dog Collars

These no bark collars use a strong citronella smell when the dog barks persistently. Because dogs really don't like the smell of citrus, this can be very effective as a no bark collar. Some citronella collars use two methods to prevent the dog from barking - first they make a warning hissing sound, prior to the spraying itself. If the dog stops barking, the spraying will not occur. The dog is not hurt at all by either the sound or the spray.

Collars With Ultrasonic/Sonic Mechanisms

These collars produce a sound that only dogs can hear. This sound is like the one created by dog whistles. When dogs learn that if they stop barking, the annoying sound will stop, they cease making noise. Even though the sound annoys them, most people cannot hear it. Is this considered ethical by the experts? Yes. Again, the dog feels no pain whatsoever, but it is only annoyed by the noise. Note: This type of no bark collar is considered the least effective, as the dog can become used to the sound over time.

Bark Collars With Electronic Devices

When the electronic collar "hears" the dog bark, it gives the dog a mild electrical shock. The shock is not harmful and it can be compared to static shock humans feel. Some people condemn the use of this type of collar, considering it unethical. Their opinion is based on the fact that, unlike the other types of collars, this electronic device does more than annoying the dog - it applies a physical stimulus. There are persons who do not approve with these devices. However, the electronic dog collar does a great job in calming down your dog so, if you are a dog owner and your dog never ceases to bark, you may as well consider buying a bark collar.

To deter a dog from barking excessively, you can choose from no bark dog collars that use citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic shocking. Unlike the citrus and the sonic collars, the electronic device is considered unethical by some people because it uses shocks. Anyway, you can safely pick any of the three alternatives, as none is considered a real threat to your dog.

Who Says You Can't Legislate Good Taste?

An adage says that nothing has the power to tell the truth about an age quite like fashion. Clothing speaks to time, place, events and values. What is fashion telling communities and parents when their public schools find it necessary to enforce a uniform dress code policy?

I've experienced the headline grabbing debate in two communities as they made the switch from students walking the halls wearing fashions inspired by a combination of corporate capitalism, slick advertising, peer pressure, retail availability and family circumstance, to a new fashion era where the school uniform is the new black. Now that some time has passed since students started attending class in clothing inspired by their local school board, is hindsight proving either side of the debate right? Community members that support a "uniform agenda" claim that uniforms promote school unity, develop student discipline and create an atmosphere more conducive to learning. Critics of the uniform policy say that students have their freedom to express themselves compromised and that a change of clothing will not affect academic performance. Both sides have their fair share of valid evidence and supporters, but hindsight is proving them all to be a little short-sighted.

While watching the uniform debate take place in a school that my daughter was attending, I was also working for one of America's most beloved department store chains. Unlike the critics of school uniforms, retailers are well aware that children already dress like their peers---their consumer group peers. The entire retail clothing industry is built upon the fact that we don't express ourselves as individuals when we shop. It would be difficult to mass produce, nationally advertise and sell huge quantities of individuality. What consumers buy is known within the industry as McFashion-clothing that is fast, disposable, easy, entertaining and largely homogeneous. To industry insiders, shoppers are expressing their lifestyle reference group whenever they make a retail purchase. Our shopping patterns are so predictable that marketers are able to guess what car you drive, which restaurants you frequent, what books or magazines you read, how much money you earn, what music you listen to and which brand names you covet. Think that you are above it all? Don't worry. The retail industry has a consumer group for you, too.

The word "teenager" was coined by Madison Avenue in 1941 when the marketing of products to adolescents began. Like all products, children's clothing is produced by commercial interests that don't care about what they are creating. Fashion trends used to flow from the top down. Now, they flow from the street up. Today it is fashionable to look downtrodden, overtly sexual or downright criminal. According to Alissa Quart, the author of Branded: The Buying and selling of Teenagers, today's teens are the victims of the contemporary luxury economy. Culturally, where and how teens shop and what they buy is the new common denominator of social discourse. There has never been a generation with more "stuff requirements" than the current generation of students because our consumption-based society is using shopping to create community. This generation lets other know who they are through what they buy and own. Back-to-school shopping isn't new, but the amount of money being spent each year has grown tremendously making it the most important selling season of the year for retailers, after Christmas. According to Richard S. Tedlow, a Professor at the Harvard Business School and former Editor of Business History Review, the emphasis on mass consumption in American society is so pervasive that we tend to take it for granted. In his book New and Improved: The Story of Mass Marketing in America, Professor Tedlow states "mass consumption is a rare phenomenon in the history of the world". He says "there is nothing "natural" about mass consumption. It is a cultural and social construction". Therefore, the clothing that we choose to wear is also devised systematically and subject to a culturally agreed upon interpretation.

We are all more or less conscious of a "mysterious bonding by means of cloth that creates for human-beings an atmosphere of human uniformity" according to Paul Fussell, a professor from the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Uniforms: Why we Are What We Wear.

Whether we want to admit it to ourselves or not, we all wear a uniform. Jeans used to represent freedom from convention. They were adopted by American society as "an impudent antidote" to uniformity and now that everyone has at least one pair of jeans hanging in their closet, they have become the most important American uniform of all.

When someone says soccer mom, lawyer, college professor, skateboarder, janitor, nurse, surfer or computer programmer, certain images come to mind and clothing is a part of that image. And even renegade image labels such as gangster, rock star or political revolutionary make a fashion statement in this day and age, a concept that borders on ironic. For example, the creation of the epitome of revolutionary-chic, the "Che Guevara Brand" (just visit The Che Store.com -"For ALL Your Revolutionary Needs!") is accused of creating "the commoditization of an anti-capitalist rebel, who opposed all that his hyper-commercialization image now represents", by writer Michael Casey, the author of Che's Afterlife: The Legacy of an Image.

Those who support the uniform agenda in public schools are actually making sure that any young revolutionary want to-be's don't make a mockery out of themselves by showing up in commercialized revolutionary-chic garb for class. Most dress code policies do NOT permit students to wear military fatigues, in addition to dog collars, or any article that condones violence or suicide. Should any parent be upset that their little darlings will be unable to do their back to school shopping at Hot Topic if their school district decides to go with uniforms?

Even the non-conformists have to conform to some degree to fit in with the other non-conformists. According to the Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge, you will be rejected by the other bohemians if your attire does not express your eccentricities, decadence, creativity and deviance with your personal style. Not that any teen or tween non-conformist would even want to be a bohemian now that being un-Dead is all the rage.

You thought that the grunge movement was bad? Did you give a sigh of relief when heroin-chic made its way to the clearance bin? Teen fashion trends never end. Vampire-chic is hot now thanks to the popularity of the Twilight series among young teen girls who are sporting their "I Like Boys Who Bite" T's and vamp jewelry. The zombie-look is currently considered chic and edgy, so if you had to pick an era to become a zombie, this is it! But even zombies have their own clothing issues to contend with as members of the army of the non-living, and most of these clothing issues seem to center around dealing with gender differences according to David P. Murphy, author of Zombies for Zombies: Advice and Etiquette for the Living Dead. This just shows how cutting edge zombie-chic is since gender issues are so trendy hot right now, even in mainstream society. Gender-bender fashion issues are nothing new to the principals of our public schools across the nation.

A growing number of teens have been dressing to articulate gender identity in the classroom, much to the befuddlement of school officials. Diane Ehrensaft, an Oakland psychologist who writes about gender issues, says "A lot of youths say they won't be bound by boys having to wear this or girls wearing that. For them, gender is a creative playing field". This latest teen cultural phenomena often leaves school officials grappling for answers to questions about whether or not boys should be allowed to wear dresses and make up to school. "Dress is always code", states Jan Hoffman in her article for the New York Times, "Can a Boy Wear a Skirt to School?", "particularly for teenagers eager to telegraph evolving identities". And as if that hard enough, when school officials want to discipline a kid who is inappropriately using their wardrobe to express a variance in what is considered a cultural norm of ANY KIND, they have to contend with "antidiscrimination policies, mental health factors, community standards and classroom distractions".

But even the counter-culture bad asses like those who adhere to Goth fashion recognize the inherent need to sometimes blend in with the mainstream. Jillian Venters, the inspiration for Gothic-Charm School.com, suggests that Goths should dress in appropriate attire for job interviews, the corporate world and family get-togethers. Only a foolish Goth fails to recognize that the usual Goth wardrobe may not be ideal for the summer months since all black clothing does absorb heat very efficiently, making it difficult to maintain that air of other-worldliness and mystery while sweating profusely. There are many practical reasons that self-expression by clothing sometimes has to be curtailed. Even the most hard-core Goth never wears PVC trousers to the beach.

Sometimes things such as safety concerns, functionality, community values and standards of decency need to be considered when it comes to our clothing choices in both the adult and student-world. Like it or not, as a community and as a culture, clothing etiquette does exist and our young adults need help learning the rules.

Those who argue against school uniforms inevitable say that the policy goes against the American value of freedom. But all freedoms come with responsibility. The Northwest Florida Daily News, while arguing against school uniforms in their community, stated "In our view, a splendid way to teach the values of freedom and responsibility is to let youngsters experience freedom, and, in the process learn to act responsibly". In his article "Erosion of Freedom" from the Salt Lake Tribune, Kent J. Fetzer argues against coerced uniformity and says that as long as clothing choices meet with common standards of decency, schools should accept these choices. But who defines "decent" in a school setting and who is to teach the student to act responsibly when it comes to clothing choices if not the school officials and the school community?

Self expression in schools will always have to be partially limited because it is a communal setting according to Kay Hymowitz, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. The federal courts seem to agree with this notion. The claim that school uniforms in public schools violate the constitutional rights of students is fundamentally flawed according to "Jacobs v. Clark County School District" because "the rights of students must be applied in light of the special characteristics of the school environment".

So what does all of this talk about fashion, consumer groups and our present consumer based culture have to do with goes on behind closed doors in the public schoolhouse? Parents allow many things to influence their children that have no vested interest in their future outcomes. While doing research for a column about how children learn for the Delaware County Daily Times after my daughter was determined to be "at risk" for having a learning difference in kindergarten, I learned that students only spend 10% of their life in school by the time they turn 18. The other 90% is spent at home and in their community absorbing the influences that shape their values and habits. Social scientists observe that adult authority is weaker and more fragmented than it has ever been at any other time in history. Young people are spending more and more time with their peers and exposed to the media than any previous generation.

When local communities debate about school reform and lofty goals like leaving no child behind, they talk as if our problems with education are limited to what happens in school. Every year, we spend more of your tax dollars trying to fix education. But schools themselves can't make up for the fact that many inequities in education take place outside of school influence.

The impact of family and community life follows a child through the entire learning process. We spend a lot of public debate time talking about making teachers better at teaching, but little is ever said about preparing parents for their role as their child's first and most influential teacher. Schools, businesses and other social institutions require skills that children just can't acquire without extensive parental assistance.

Many of today's kids need more attention than what they are getting from parents. But because problems at school get more attention than the problems at home, a culture has been created that tells many parents that they don't play an important part in the education process.

To really improve schools, everyone needs to realize how important it is to make sure that home and school work together. A uniform dress code policy represents that goal. It serves a an unconscious reminder to parents and the community at large that what happens at school matters just as much as what students bring in with them from the outside. Parents have to actively enforce the values and habits that schools require so that their children are entering the building with the skills needed to get an education. Parents, and the community at large, need to show their children that they support their schools. A simple way to get this message across to our kids is by supporting your local school officials when they state that they have a need to enforce a dress code within the school community.

We have specific clothing that we wear to life changing events like weddings, funerals and other special occasions. Our children attend school to prepare for their future. It seems more than appropriate to teach students that their future is worthy enough to require special clothing.

Remote Collar - A Simple Guide For Beginners

Some dogs are just too social they run away from you to get other people's attention. To an observer, it might look adorable, cute even, because they don't have to apologize to other people for the bother your dog causes.

So you get a day that's supposed to be easy but ends up a stressful one - you want to lock up your dog and put it in its leash permanently. There are times your dogs just does what it wants, ignoring your calls and shouts - it will chew furniture, dig garden soil, run after other pets, scare little kids, and so on.

Dog Collars

Some background info

Perhaps there's a way to make a dog avoid doing some bad deed - chewing other people's plants, chasing other dogs, digging up your garden. Can this be done? You can, by using a remote collar. Training dogs to do and avoiding doing some things means a lot of time and hard work. One had to work out a situation where the dog was tempted to do his bad deeds - and then when the behavior is seen, or is about to start, one could "punish" the dog. Rewards were doled out conditionally - when the dog obeyed, it received attention, treats, play time.

Obedience training in the modern age

By using a remote collar, you can certainly do the needed observation, only that the transmitter you have means a quick shock. Some nasty dog behavior can be weeded out almost completely, such as chasing cars, running after people, chewing up shoes, and so on.

So what are the benefits of using one?

Days are over when the only option you have is to keep your misbehaving dog on a tight leash should it become a nuisance. A remote collar package includes one transmitter and one or more collars with receiver devices on each; the transmission range is from 500 to more than 1000 meters, depending on the model you chose. That means, regardless of the number of dogs you have - a handful of toy dogs or half a dozen working dogs - a remote collar is worth it.

The nuts and bolts - how it works

Your dog's collar has a device that releases a harmless low current shock. With a remote collar, you just click and the dog feels the inconvenient jolt - a convenience you don't have with a physical leash. The static shock is low volt and harmless but completely annoying - enough that your dog will pay attention to it and stop its unwanted behavior. It won't take long before you dog learns to link the unwanted behavior and the annoyance.
