The Disadvantages of Using a Head Collar

Even though head collars have many advantages, they have some distinct disadvantages as well. To begin with, if you get too carried away, the dog may become dependent on the tool, and not apply the training that it has received without it. Sometimes dogs can quickly identify the differences between their regular collar and the head collar, and will adjust their behavior in accordance to which one they are wearing.

Also, there are some canines, in particular the ones that may not be used to wearing a head collar, who will dislike it so much that they will continually paw at it, scratch it off or continue to pull on it excessively. If you are trying to use one with an unruly dog that is doing this, your best choice is to keep the dog moving and distracted until they get accustomed to wearing a head collar. You can also make the dog sit by pulling up on its as another correctional move.

Dog Collars

There is also one smaller issue with the head collar. A lot of people will react to and treat it like a muzzle, when it is indeed not. This causes people to react to the dog as though it may bite them. This isn't a huge setback, there are those out there who find it troubling.

Overall, if you plan to use a head collar for training, please do the following. Read the directions that come with the collar first. Have a game plan for dog training, and make sure to use good solid training methods in combination with the collar. Just using this tool alone is not a life saver.
