Large Munsterlander

The Large Munsterlander hails from Germany. It is all purpose gun dog that excels in tracking and recovering and is used to hunt upland birds and game. It has long been popular in Europe and is gaining in popularity in the United States because of its reputation of being an easy dog to handle.

This breed is a dedicated enemy of birds and small prey. Good with children, the Large Munsterlander is friendly and loyal and playful. This is not a dog for inactive people. It will do best with people who love to be outdoors. This breed is a heavy shedder especially in the spring.

Despite its name, the Large Munsterlander is actually a medium-sized dog. Its head is broad and slightly rounded with round-tipped ears hanging close to the head. The body is as long as it is tall. The tail is customarily docked.

The coat is dense and long with feathers along the ears, legs and tail. The Large Munsterlander is usually black with a sold black head. A white blaze or star is allowed on the head. The body is white with black patches or spots. Brown dogs are rare but do occur.

The Large Munsterlander is an all-purpose hunter, capable of pointing, retrieving, and general utility work. They have excellent noses and work equally well on land and in water. The Large Munsterlander is an easy dog to train and its thick coat allows them to hunt in cold weather with ease.

Bred for hunting and the pressures involved, this dog will adapt to any terrain and to every type of hunting. The Large Munsterlander is resistant to fatigue and has a thick coat to protect it against to bad weather. They are happiest when used as working dogs.

The Large Munsterlander has a very easy going temperament around other animals and children and makes a good pet. It is a very loyal dog, easy to train and affectionate, always willing to play. They are extremely people dependent so these are not dogs that can be left alone for long periods of time

Munsterlanders will search for rabbits and other prey under every bush they can find. These dogs need exercise in wide open areas and prefer to have access to water. They love to retrieve and will do so tirelessly from water or land. They are very responsive and will not run off or leave you out sight for a minute.

History
The Large Munsterlander is represented in paintings as far back as the Middle ages, but was considered a color variant of the German Longhaired Pointer. They were recognized as a separate breed in Germany in the early 1900s. The breed was first brought to North America by Kurt von Kleist in 1966 and is steadily gaining popularity in the United States.
