Dog Myth Nr. 2 .. Harnesses animate pulling

Dog Myth Nr. 2 .. Harnesses animate pulling Tube. Duration : 4.13 Mins.

Traditionalists claim, that harnesses encourage a dog to pull. It's not the equipment that teaches the dog to pull, it's the trainer who teaches the dog to pull. Dogs pull against any equipment. It's called the "opposition reflex". The more they pull and tension against the pulling is applied, the more they pull. In order to achieve loose-leash walking you have to TEACH loose leash walking. If you correct pulling, you are only correcting pulling, ie temporarily interrupting the pulling, but not showing the dog what you want. Opposition reflex is self-rewarding, in that the dog gets what it wants - to go further, whether wearing a choker, prong or harness. OTOH, when the dog learns that pulling will not get her what she wants and there is no tension going backwards as in a correction, which releases the opposition reflex, which in turn only causes more pulling, AND is rewarded for walking without this tension, which DOESN'T cause this reflex to be released, loose-leash walk does get the dog what she wants - to go forward, just at OUR tempo. It's a win-win situation and in a non-confrontational way. The dog gets what she wants (to go forward) and we get what we want (less tension on arm and shoulder muscles and tendons). Everyone is happy. This is of course a tongue-in-cheek demonstration of loose-leash walking and shows the product of the TEACHING/TRAINING. Traditional so-called "balanced" dog trainers and other old-school trainers pooh-pooh clicker training, saying that ...
