Pit bull" is not a breed, but a "type" that encompasses several registered breeds and crossbreeds. Therefore, statistics that claim "Pit bulls" are responsible for some percentage of attacks are lumping many separate breeds together, and then comparing that to other dogs that are counted as individual breeds. What most people dont understand is that what makes a fight or flight animal like a dog less likely to act aggressively is proper subordination and a their inner sense that they are a safe and secure member of a pack. Insecure dogs are unpredictable. Neglected dogs are more prone to aggressive behavior then ones that are properly handled. Beating a dog does not usually make it a monster. In fact abused dogs tend to cower more easily. Pit bulls are extraordinarily strong dogs and when they act out negatively the results are far more devastating then when a lab acts out or a poodle. Thats why pits have a bad rap. And the bad rap is justified. Pits are not an easy breed to handle. They require and experienced handler to insure that when they are fully mature they are 100% predictable in every situation from. My pit is not territorial; he is not food crazed or food aggressive. He is not spooked by cars, bikes, skateboards, or cats. He is gentle with children of all ages. He is a right minded animal.
